How to change your free TeleportHQ web address
Every TeleportHQ project gets a free web address, such as https://grizzled-joyous-ape.teleporthq.app. To change the name part, open Publish, click the pencil next to the address right below Production, type a new name and click Continue and publish. TeleportHQ saves the name and publishes your site on the new address straight away.
Before you start
- Plan and role. Changing the address publishes your site, so you need a Trial, Pro or Premium workspace and the Owner, Admin or Designer role.
- Your current work goes live. Saving the new name also publishes everything currently in the editor to Production. Finish or undo any half-done changes first.
- Want your own domain instead? To use a domain you bought, like
joesgarage.com, see How to connect your own domain.
Steps
- Open your project in the editor.
- At the top right, click Publish.
- In the window's left menu, make sure Publish is selected (not Deployments). At the top, keep Production selected.
- Right below Production, click the pencil button next to your site's address. Its tooltip reads Edit URL.
- A field opens between
https://and the address ending. It shows your current name in grey. Type the new name, for examplejoes-garage. - Wait a moment while TeleportHQ checks that the name is valid and free. If it isn't, a message appears under the field.
- Click Continue and publish, or press Enter. To leave the address as it is, click Cancel.
Check that it worked
The address below Production shows the new name and the status Publish in progress, then Published. A message appears: "Your application is ready at: https://joes-garage.teleporthq.app". Click the address to open it.
Rules for the name
- Use 3 to 50 characters.
- Use letters (A–Z), numbers (0–9) and dashes between words, for example
sunny-bakery-2. - Don't start or end with a dash, and don't use two dashes in a row.
- The name must not already be used by another TeleportHQ site.
- Capital letters are saved as lowercase.
Troubleshooting
"Subdomains need to be between 3 and 50 characters, alphanumeric (A-Z, 0-9) with dashes between words." The name breaks one of the rules above. Remove spaces, dots, underscores or accents, and check the dashes.
"The selected slug is not available" Another site already uses this name. Try a variation, for example add your city: sunny-bakery-lyon.
"Could not update teleport vercel alias. Please try again!" The new name couldn't be saved. Check that it has no more than 50 characters, wait a moment and try again. If it keeps failing, write to hello@teleporthq.io.
The old address still opens Changing the name doesn't switch the old address off. The address your project was created with keeps opening and keeps getting every publish beside the new one: each publish attaches both names. A name you gave up after a second change keeps showing the last build published under it and never updates. Share only the new address, and update any links you posted before. Another TeleportHQ site can also take the name you gave up later.
Good to know
- The address ending. The ending shown next to the field depends on your plan:
.teleporthq.siteon Pro and Premium,.teleporthq.appon a trial. During a trial the window may show.teleporthq.site, but your live trial site is at the address ending in.teleporthq.app. After the workspace subscribes, your next publish moves the site to.teleporthq.site, so links you shared during the trial change. See How to publish your site. - Staging follows the new name. Your next publish to Staging uses the new name plus
-staging, for examplejoes-garage-staging. If that's taken, TeleportHQ picks a similar one. See How to test changes on a staging site. - Custom domains aren't affected. If a custom domain is connected, it keeps working, and the TeleportHQ address keeps sending visitors to it.
- No setting in Project settings. Older guides mention a "Site address" field in Project settings. It no longer exists: the address is only changed in the Publish window.
