Which DNS records do I need for my domain?

To connect your own domain to a TeleportHQ site, you add DNS records at the company where you bought the domain. A root domain like mybakery.com needs an A record with the name @ and the value 76.76.21.21. A www address or a subdomain like shop.mybakery.com needs a CNAME record pointing to cname.vercel-dns.com. Sometimes TeleportHQ also asks for a TXT record named _vercel to prove you own the domain.

Where TeleportHQ shows your records

TeleportHQ shows the exact records for your domain in the Custom domain section of the Publish window, after you enter your domain. The records appear only while something is missing: each address that isn't set up yet gets an Invalid Configuration label and a Type / Name / Value table with copy buttons. Once every record works, the table disappears.

To see the records again, click Check status in the Custom domain section. TeleportHQ also checks your domain each time you open the Publish window. For the full walkthrough, see How to connect your own domain.

The records TeleportHQ asks for

When TeleportHQ shows itTypeNameValue
A root domain, for example mybakery.comA@76.76.21.21
A www address, for example www.mybakery.comCNAMEwwwcname.vercel-dns.com
A subdomain, for example shop.mybakery.comCNAMEshopcname.vercel-dns.com
An ownership check is neededTXT_vercelThe value TeleportHQ shows. It is different for every domain, so copy it from TeleportHQ.

Which records you need, by setup

The records depend on what you type and on the option you pick in the Choose default domain step.

What you connectRecords to add
www.mybakery.com as the main address (recommended), with mybakery.com sending visitors to itA @ → 76.76.21.21 and CNAME www → cname.vercel-dns.com
mybakery.com as the main address, with www.mybakery.com sending visitors to itA @ → 76.76.21.21 and CNAME www → cname.vercel-dns.com
mybakery.com with "no redirect"A @ → 76.76.21.21 only
A subdomain such as shop.mybakery.comCNAME shop → cname.vercel-dns.com only

A subdomain with more than one part. For an address such as blog.shop.mybakery.com, TeleportHQ shows only blog in the Name column. At most providers, the name must be everything before your domain: type blog.shop.

The TXT record (ownership check)

TeleportHQ shows a TXT record named _vercel when the domain must prove it belongs to you. This usually happens when the domain was connected somewhere else before, for example to another project or another hosting account. Add the TXT record exactly as shown, keep the A or CNAME records too, then click Check status.

Conflicting records

If TeleportHQ shows "Remove the following conflicting DNS record from your DNS provider:", your domain still has an old record that points somewhere else. The row shows that record's type and value. Delete that record at your domain provider, then click Check status. For example, an old A record for @ from a previous website host must be removed.

The Name column of a conflict row always shows @, even when the old record is on www or a subdomain. Find the record at your provider by its type and value.

Tips for common domain providers

  • The "Name" column may have another label at your provider, such as Host, Hostname or Record name.
  • @ means the root domain. Some providers want @, others want the field left empty or want the full domain (mybakery.com). Follow your provider's hint.
  • Don't add your domain to the name twice. If the provider adds .mybakery.com automatically, type only www or shop.
  • Keep your email records. Records of type MX (and TXT records for email) don't affect your website. Leave them in place.
  • Remove the provider's parking page. Many providers add a default A record or a "parked" redirect. Delete it, or TeleportHQ reports it as a conflict.
  • Be patient. DNS changes often work in minutes, but can take up to 48 hours to reach everyone.

Good to know

  • TeleportHQ sites are hosted on Vercel. That's why the values mention Vercel.
  • You don't need to change your domain's nameservers. Adding the records above is enough.
  • A custom domain needs a Trial, Pro or Premium plan. See How many custom domains can I connect?.

Why is my custom domain not working?

A TeleportHQ custom domain usually fails because the project has no Production publish yet, the DNS records are missing, mistyped or still updating, an old record conflicts, the workspace has no free domain slot, or the trial or subscription ended.

How many custom domains can I connect (and how to get more)?

TeleportHQ Trial, Pro and Premium workspaces include 1 custom domain, plus 1 more for each Web App slot you buy; on Pro or Premium you can buy extra custom domain slots with Buy Custom Domain Slot in the Publish window or under Workspace Settings → Custom Domains.
