How to view, add and edit records
In TeleportHQ, the rows of a database table (called records) are managed in the table window, a spreadsheet-like view inside the editor. Open it with View Data next to a table in the Data Sources panel. Click Create Record to add a row, double-click a cell to change its value, or open a row's menu and choose View Details or Delete Record. Your pages update automatically with the changes.
Before you start
- Only the project owner or an admin can create, edit and delete records. Other roles can look at the rows. See What can each role do?
- Which data sources can be edited: the TeleportHQ database and the databases you connect (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Amazon Redshift, Supabase, MongoDB, Firestore, ClickHouse, Airtable, CockroachDB, TiDB and Turso). Rows from a REST API, JavaScript data, a Google Sheet, a CSV file or Redis are shown read-only.
Open the table window
You can open the TeleportHQ table window in three ways:
- In the left sidebar, click Data Sources, click your database card, then click View Data next to a table.
- Select a list (Array Mapper) bound to the table and click Manage Data in its settings.
- On the canvas, double-click a text that shows a database field. The table window opens on that record. Texts that show a product, a blog post or a Help Center article open that item in its own panel instead.
- The views: Content (your rows), Structure (your columns), Diagram (how tables link together) and, for the TeleportHQ database, SQL (look up rows with a query).
- The table tools: export (tooltip Export table data), the column filter (choose which columns show), AI Analysis, the CSV import (TeleportHQ database only) and Sample rows.
- Create Record, to add a row.
- Search..., to find rows.
Next to Create Record, Refresh data (the circular arrow) reloads the rows. The Tables list on the left switches between the database's tables. The line above the rows counts them, for example "48 rows • 6 columns • Double-click a cell to edit it". The rows show 20 at a time; use the arrows under them to move through the pages.
Add a record
- In the table window, open Content.
- Click Create Record. The Create New Record panel opens.
- Fill in each field under Record Data. Required fields have a
*. For example, for aproductstable:name=Chocolate cake,price=24.50. - For an image field, click Assets to pick an uploaded image or a stock photo.
- For an ID field that shows Generate, click it to create a unique ID. Fields marked Auto-generated fill themselves.
- Click Create.
The new row appears in the table.
Change one value
- In Content, double-click the cell you want to change, for example a price.
- Type the new value.
- Press Enter to save it, or Escape to cancel.
If the value can't be saved, the reason shows under the cell. If you already moved to another cell, a message names the column instead, for example "price was not saved: …".
Edit a whole record
- In Content, click the row's ⋯ button at the right end of the row.
Click View Details. (Clicking a row's cell once opens the same panel.)
- In the Record Details panel, click Edit.
- Change the fields, for example set
priceto26.00. - Click Save.
The primary key field (the ID) has a PK badge and can't be changed: "Primary key — this field identifies the record and cannot be edited".
Work on several records at once
Tick the checkbox at the start of each row you want. The toolbar changes to "2 of 48 selected", with these buttons:
- Export: downloads the selected rows as a CSV file.
- Set column: gives one column the same value on every selected row. In the Set a column panel, pick the Column, type the New value (leave it empty to clear the column) and click Set on 2 rows.
- Delete (2): deletes the selected rows. A bar asks Delete Permanently ("You are about to permanently delete 2 records. This action cannot be undone."); click Delete Permanently to confirm, or Cancel.
Click Deselect all to clear the selection.
To delete one record, open the row's ⋯ menu and click Delete Record, then Delete Permanently.
Add sample rows
To try your pages with realistic data, click Sample rows in the toolbar. In How many rows (1-100), type a number, for example 20, and click Add 20 rows. TeleportHQ fills each column with values that fit its name and type, such as names, emails, prices and dates, and links to rows that already exist in other tables.
Export records to a CSV file
- In Content, optionally search or select the rows you want.
- Click the download button (tooltip Export table data), or Export when rows are selected.
The CSV file includes all visible columns. Exporting works on the trial, Pro and Premium.
Look up rows with SQL
The TeleportHQ database has a read-only SQL view for checking your data, for example counting orders or joining two tables.
- At the top of the table window, click SQL. The box starts with a query for the open table, such as
SELECT * FROM "orders" LIMIT 50. - Change the query if you need to.
- Click Run, or press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter.
The rows show under the box, with their count. The view runs one SELECT at a time and changes nothing ("Read-only: one SELECT at a time, nothing is changed."). At most 500 rows come back.
Check that it worked
The row shows the new values in Content. Lists and tables on your canvas that use this table refresh automatically. Your published site shows the change the next time a visitor loads the page; a list that caches its results can take up to its cache time.
Troubleshooting
"We could not update the record. Make sure you have enough permissions and you fill all the required fields." Your role can't edit records, or a required field is empty. Ask the project owner or an admin, or fill every required field. The same kind of message appears for creating and deleting. When you create a record in a full TeleportHQ database table, this message appears too: see TeleportHQ database limits by plan.
"This record cannot be edited because it has no ID field" The table has no primary key column, so TeleportHQ can't tell which row to change. Add a primary key column in Structure. See How to add columns and link tables together.
"This row is open for editing in the side panel. Save or cancel it there first." You double-clicked a cell of the row open in Record Details. Click Save or Cancel in the panel first.
"No data available" The table is empty, or no rows match your search. Clear the search box.
"Error loading data" The rows couldn't be read. If the message says the project is not active, the TeleportHQ database is inactive: see Why is my TeleportHQ database inactive?
A table in Supabase looks empty Supabase security rules may block reading. See How to connect Supabase.
Good to know
- The CSV import in the toolbar updates rows from a file. See How to import data from a spreadsheet file.
- AI Analysis in the toolbar shows "AI Analysis Coming Soon" and doesn't work yet.
- The ? button in the toolbar (About Working with rows) sums up the cell editing, selection and import tools.
