How to change a page's URL and create nested URLs
In TeleportHQ, each page's web address is set in the URL field of its Page SEO Settings. Right-click the page in the Pages list, click Page SEO Settings, and type the address, for example about or services/wedding-cakes for a nested URL. Putting a page in a folder does not change its address.
Before you start
- By default, a TeleportHQ page's address is made from its name: a page called Our menu lives at
/our-menu. You only need these steps for a different address. - The homepage's address is always
/and the 404 page's address can't be changed.
Steps
- In the left sidebar, click the layers icon (tooltip Pages, Components & Tree View).
- In the Pages list, right-click the page. You can also click the … button at the end of its row.
- Click Page SEO Settings. A panel titled with the page name, for example Wedding cakes Settings, opens next to the sidebar.
- Click the URL field at the top. The grey text shows the current automatic address.
- Type the new address, for example
services/wedding-cakes. You don't need to type the first/; TeleportHQ adds it. - Click outside the field. The address is cleaned up and saved.
The same fields are also above the canvas: with the page open, click Page settings at the top right of the canvas, then SEO.
Check that it worked
The URL field in Page SEO Settings now shows your address, for example /services/wedding-cakes. Links you made to this page with the Page link option keep working, because they point to the page, not the old address. Your live site uses the new address after you publish again.
How TeleportHQ cleans up a URL
When you leave the URL field, TeleportHQ tidies what you typed so it works as a web address:
- Spaces become dashes:
our teambecomes/our-team. - Special characters (including accented letters) are removed:
summer sale!becomes/summer-sale. - Words joined in camelCase get dashes:
ourTeambecomes/our-team. - A
/at the end is removed. - Slashes in the middle are kept, so nested addresses like
/services/wedding-cakeswork.
To go back to the automatic address, clear the URL field.
Troubleshooting
"Each page should have a unique URL to ensure your application works correctly. This URL is used by page '…'." Another page already uses that address. Pick a different one, or change the other page's URL first.
"This URL is reserved for the home page to ensure your application works correctly." You typed / for a page that isn't the homepage. To make the page open at /, set it as your homepage instead. See How to choose which page is your homepage.
"Cannot delete page URL, because the one that will be generated in its place is already in use. The URL is used on page '…'." You cleared the field, but the automatic address (made from the page name) is taken by another page. Type a unique address, or rename one of the pages.
"Invalid characters: < , > , { , }" Remove those characters from the address.
The URL field is greyed out The page is your homepage or your 404 page, whose addresses are fixed. Admin panel pages also have a fixed address that starts with /admin.
I moved my page into a folder, but the address didn't change Folders in the Pages list only organize the editor. They never change addresses. Type the nested address in the URL field, as shown in the steps. See How to organize pages and components in folders.
Good to know
- Renaming doesn't override your URL. Once you've typed a URL, renaming the page keeps it. Pages with an automatic address follow their new name.
- Redirects follow the page. If your project has redirects from or to the old address, TeleportHQ points them to the new one. Visitors who saved the old address are not redirected automatically unless you add a redirect. See How to hide a page from Google, set a canonical URL or redirect a page.
- Multilingual sites. The URL is the same for every language; TeleportHQ adds the language code in front, for example
/fr/services/wedding-cakes. See How URLs and SEO work on a multilingual site. - Details pages (one page per blog post, product or data item) have a different URL section with a fixed part and a changing part. See How to create a page for each item.
