How to organize pages and components in folders

In TeleportHQ, you can group pages or components into folders in the Pages, Components & Tree View panel. Click + on the Pages or Components folder, choose Create Folder, name it, then drag items onto it. Folders only tidy up the editor: they don't change your page addresses or your live site.

Before you start

  • You need a role that can create pages (for page folders) or components (for component folders).
  • Folders are available on every plan. They are different from the project folders on your dashboard.

1. Create a folder

  1. In the left sidebar, click the layers icon (tooltip Pages, Components & Tree View).
  2. On the Pages folder row (or Components), click +.
  3. Click Create Folder. A new folder appears, ready to rename.
The + menu of the Pages folder in TeleportHQ, with Create Folder highlighted below New Page
  1. Type a name, for example legal.
  2. Press Enter.

To create a folder inside another folder, right-click that folder (or point at its row and click + or …) and choose Create Folder.

2. Move pages or components into the folder

  1. In the Explorer panel, press and hold on a page (or component) row.
  2. Drag it onto the folder row. If the folder has items and is closed, it opens after a moment.
  3. Release the mouse button.

You can drag whole folders into other folders the same way.

Check that it worked

The page or component now shows inside the folder in the Explorer panel. Click the arrow next to the folder to open or close it. To open or close many folders at once, right-click a folder and choose Expand All or Collapse All.

Rename or delete a folder

To rename a TeleportHQ page or component folder, right-click it (or click …), choose Rename, type the name and press Enter.

To delete a folder:

  1. Right-click the folder, or click its … button.
  2. Click Delete. The Delete all folders and contents window lists everything inside.
  3. Click Delete to confirm, or Cancel.

Troubleshooting

"Pages cannot be moved into Component folders." or "Components cannot be moved into Pages folders." Pages and components live in separate trees. Keep page folders under Pages and component folders under Components.

"Folder cannot be moved into itself." or "Folder cannot be moved into its descendant folders." You dropped a folder onto itself or onto one of its own sub-folders. Drop it somewhere else.

"This folder cannot be moved." or "This folder cannot be renamed." Built-in folders created by TeleportHQ features, such as authentication, admin-panel, e-commerce, blog, help-center and bookings, are managed for you. You can't rename or move them. The main Pages and Components folders can't be renamed or deleted either.

"This folder is managed by Teleport and cannot be deleted." or "…cannot be renamed." TeleportHQ created this folder for a feature and protects it. Leave it in place.

"This folder holds your standard product page. Delete your custom product pages first — every product without a page of its own is shown there." In a store, the folder with the standard product page can't be deleted while custom product pages exist. Delete the custom product pages first, then the folder.

"Product pages cannot be moved outside the products folder." or "Authentication pages cannot be moved outside the authentication folder." Store and login pages must stay in their feature folder to keep working.

My folder name turned lowercase or got a number TeleportHQ saves folder names in lowercase, and two folders in the same place can't share a name, so a number is added, for example legal1.

Good to know

  • Folders don't change URLs. A page in a blog folder is not at /blog/.... To create a nested address, set it in the page's URL field. See How to change a page's URL and create nested URLs.
  • Order is alphabetical. Pages and components inside a folder are always sorted by name. You can't reorder them by hand.
  • Folders can control access. Owners and Admins can choose which collaborators see a folder's pages with Permissions. See How to control which collaborators see each page.
  • Folders can require sign-in. Turn on Require Authentication in a folder's menu, and every page inside it becomes members-only, including pages you move in later. See How to make a page visible only to signed-in users.
  • Dashed folders are suggestions. Purple dashed rows with Activate (for example blog or e-commerce) are placeholders for features you haven't turned on yet. They are hidden unless you turn them on: click the Project settings cog at the bottom of the left sidebar, then under Editor click Preferences, then Editing, and switch on Show proposed plugins under Export and AI. The Plugins button in the left sidebar lists the same features. In a project you started blank, a plugin you left out in the Choose your plugins window that opened with it gets no dashed folder, even with the switch on. To add it later, open Project Menu → Edit → Enable Plugins…, or switch it on in Plugins.
  • Page transitions. If your site has a page transition, a folder's menu also has a Skip page transitions switch, so every page inside appears instantly. See How to turn off the page transition for one page or folder.
  • Renaming a folder can't be undone with Undo. Rename it again instead.
