How to back up and restore your project

How to back up and restore your project

A TeleportHQ backup is a snapshot of your whole project that you can go back to later. In the editor, click Backups in the bottom toolbar, then click Backup current project state to save one. To go back, click Restore next to a backup. Restoring changes the project in the editor; publish again to update your live site. Backups aren't included in the trial: on a trial, ask TeleportHQ support to restore one for you.

Before you start

  • Plan: backups are available on paid plans (Pro and Premium include 5 manual backups per project). They aren't included in the free trial: the Backups button is greyed out with the tooltip "Project backups aren't included in the trial. Subscribe to unlock." On a trial, write to hello@teleporthq.io and ask support to restore a backup for you.
  • Role: Owners, Admins, Designers and Editors can create backups. Only Owners and Admins can restore, edit or delete them.
  • For small mistakes, use undo instead (Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z). See How to undo and redo changes.

Steps

Create a backup

  1. Open your project in the TeleportHQ editor.
  2. In the toolbar at the bottom of the canvas, click Backups. The Backups window opens.
  3. Click Backup current project state (with the + icon).
  4. Optional: in Backup name (optional), type a name. For example, type Before homepage redesign.
  5. Optional: in Description (optional), add a note.
  6. Click Save backup. The message "Backup saved successfully" appears, and the backup is added to the list.

Restore a backup

  1. In the toolbar at the bottom of the canvas, click Backups.
  2. Find the backup you want. Each shows its name, when it was made, its size and description.
  3. Point at it: Restore, Edit and Delete appear at the right of the row. Click Restore. TeleportHQ asks: Restore "<name>"? This will replace the current project state.
  4. Leave Create a safety backup before restoring? Max 2, oldest is overwritten. ticked, so you can undo the restore if needed.
  5. Click Restore.
  6. The Backup restored window says "The project has been restored to the selected backup. The page will reload to apply the changes." Click Reload now, or wait a few seconds.
  7. Publish your site to put the restored version live. See How to publish your site.

Undo turning a project into a web app

When a TeleportHQ website becomes a web app (for example, when you switch on a feature such as a blog or sign-in), TeleportHQ first saves an automatic backup named Before Web App features Enabled, labeled Automated. A project that is still blank (an empty home page and no components) gets no backup, because there is nothing in it to restore. To go back to the website as it was:

  1. In the toolbar at the bottom of the canvas, click Backups.
  2. Find Before Web App features Enabled.
  3. Click Restore next to it, and follow the restore steps above.

On a trial, backups aren't included: write to hello@teleporthq.io and ask support to restore it for you. See What's the difference between a website and a web app?.

Rename or delete a backup

  • Rename: click the pencil icon (tooltip Edit) next to a backup, change Name or Description, and click Save.
  • Delete: click the trash icon (tooltip Delete). TeleportHQ asks Delete "<name>"? and warns "This cannot be undone." Click Delete. The message "Backup deleted" appears.

Check that it worked

After restoring, the editor reloads and shows the project as it was when the backup was made. Anyone else in the project sees "Project restored from backup" and their editor reloads too.

Troubleshooting

The Backups button is greyed out Your workspace is on the free trial. Backups need Pro or Premium. See How to subscribe to Pro or Premium. To restore a backup during the trial, write to hello@teleporthq.io and ask support to do it.

There is no Backups button Your role can't use backups (Viewers can't), or the project is open in view-only mode.

I can't see the Restore button Only the project Owner and Admins can restore, edit or delete backups. Ask one of them.

"Backup limit reached. Delete old backups or contact the team." The project already has the maximum number of manual backups (5 on Pro and Premium). Delete a backup you no longer need, then save again.

"Storage limit reached. Delete old backups or assets to free up space." Your project's storage is full. Delete old backups or unused files.

"Too many backup requests. Please wait a few minutes and try again." or "Too many restore requests. Please wait a few minutes before restoring again." You can save, restore or delete up to 10 times in 10 minutes. Wait a few minutes.

"Name must be at least 3 characters" Backup names need 3 to 100 characters, or leave the name empty.

A red warning: "This backup predates this project's database." The backup was made before the project had its TeleportHQ database. "Restoring it will permanently delete the TeleportHQ database and all of its data — the database will no longer be available. This cannot be undone." Only restore it if you're sure you don't need that data.

Good to know

  • Automatic backups: TeleportHQ also saves your project automatically when you open it, at most every 6 hours, and keeps the two most recent. They're labeled Auto Save. Backups made before a restore are labeled Safety (the two most recent are kept). Backups TeleportHQ makes before a big change, such as Before Web App features Enabled, are labeled Automated.
  • Restoring doesn't change your live site until you publish again.
  • To bring back an earlier live version without changing the project, see How to go back to an earlier version of your live site.
  • Trial projects: TeleportHQ keeps making automatic backups during the trial, but the Backups window stays closed until the workspace subscribes. To restore one during the trial, ask support at hello@teleporthq.io.
  • Backups belong to the project, and you open them from inside it. Once a project is deleted, you can't reach its backups yourself.
  • Project settings → Site → General (the Project settings cog at the bottom of the left sidebar) shows, under Versions, how many backups the project has and how much space they use.

How to undo and redo changes

In the TeleportHQ editor, click the Undo or Redo arrow above the canvas, or press Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z (Cmd on a Mac); undo history only covers your own changes since you opened the project.

How to publish your site

In TeleportHQ, click Publish at the top right of the editor, keep Production selected, and click Publish to Production; a progress bar beside the button shows each step, and after a few minutes your site is live on a free TeleportHQ address that you can share.

How to go back to an earlier version of your live site

TeleportHQ has no single rollback button; to put an earlier version back live, open Publish → Deployments and click Redeploy on an older Production deployment, promote a finished Staging build, or restore a backup in the editor and publish again.

What happens when my trial or subscription ends?

When a TeleportHQ trial or paid subscription ends, the workspace is locked, published sites and custom domains are removed, all projects are archived and private projects become public; after a trial, archived projects are deleted about 30 days later, a workspace whose paid subscription ended keeps them, and subscribing again restores them so you can republish.

What's the difference between a website and a web app?

In TeleportHQ, a website (a presentation website) presents information and its code can be downloaded, while a web app adds workflows, user accounts, a store, a blog or online bookings, can't have its code downloaded, and needs a Web App slot to stay online after 7 days.
