How to go back to an earlier version of your live site
TeleportHQ doesn't have a single "roll back" button, but you can put an earlier version of your site back online in three ways. Open Publish → Deployments and click Redeploy on an older Production deployment. Or, if you tested a version on Staging, make it live with Make it live or Promote to Production. Or restore a backup of your project in the editor and publish again.
Before you start
- Role. You need the Owner, Admin or Designer role. Restoring a backup (option 3) needs the Owner or Admin role.
- Your editor doesn't change. Options 1 and 2 only change what your live site serves. The project in the editor keeps your newest edits, so the next Publish to Production puts those back live.
- Data isn't rolled back. Data stored in TeleportHQ, such as database records, form submissions and orders, stays as it is today.
Option 1: Redeploy an older Production deployment
- Open your project in the editor.
- At the top right, click Publish.
- In the Publish window, click Deployments on the left.
- Find the last version that worked, using the date. It must have the Production label and the Ready status. Click its address to check it first.
- Click the ⋮ button at the end of its row.
- Click Redeploy.
- Wait for "Deployment successfully redeployed. You can check it out in the Deployments tab."
TeleportHQ builds that version again and puts it on your live addresses: your TeleportHQ address and your custom domain. The rebuilt version appears as a new Production row at the top of the list. Because it's a new build, pages that show data load today's data.
Option 2: Make a tested Staging build live
If you published the good version to Staging, you can make it live without rebuilding. There are two ways.
From the Production view. When staging has changes your live site doesn't have, the Publish window shows "Staging is ahead of your live site" under your TeleportHQ address.
- Click Publish at the top right. The window opens on Production.
- Next to "Staging is ahead of your live site", click Make it live.
From the Deployments list. This works for any finished Staging deployment.
- In the Publish window, click Deployments.
- Click the ⋮ button next to the Staging deployment you want.
- Click Promote to Production.
You see "Your live site now serves the build you tested. Nothing was rebuilt, so it is exactly what you checked." Promote to Production works only for Staging deployments with the Ready status. See How to test changes on a staging site.
Option 3: Restore a backup and publish again
Use this option when you also want the editor to go back to the older version.
- Restore a backup of your project. See How to back up and restore your project.
- Click Publish, then Publish to Production.
Backups aren't included in the trial: on a trial, write to hello@teleporthq.io and ask support to restore one for you.
Check that it worked
Open your live address or custom domain in a private browser window. It shows the older version. In Deployments, the redeployed version is the newest row (option 1), or the promoted staging build now serves your live site (option 2).
Troubleshooting
"Deployment could not be deleted. Error message: Could not redeploy deployment…" after clicking Redeploy The redeploy failed (the message wrongly says "deleted"). Try again. If the message appeared after about two minutes of waiting, the build may still finish and go live by itself: check Deployments again in a few minutes before you retry.
The live site went back to the newest version Someone clicked Publish to Production (or Make it live) after your rollback. To avoid this, fix the problem in the editor before the next publish, or restore a backup (option 3).
Promote to Production is greyed out It only works on Staging deployments with the Ready status. For a Production deployment, use Redeploy.
Redeploy is greyed out Another publish is running. Wait until it finishes.
Good to know
- Test big changes first. Publishing to Staging before going live makes going back easier. See How to test changes on a staging site.
- After an Unpublish, options 1 and 2 also bring your site back online, at your TeleportHQ address and your custom domain. See How to take your site offline (Unpublish).
- Deleted deployments can't be redeployed. Keep the last working deployment until you're sure the new one is fine. See How to see and manage your deployments.
