How to take your site offline (Unpublish)

How to take your site offline (Unpublish)

In TeleportHQ, you take a published site offline from the Publish window: on Production, click Unpublish site at the bottom left of the window, then confirm with Unpublish. Your TeleportHQ address and your custom domain stop showing the site. Your project, your deployments and your staging site stay as they are, and publishing again brings the site back.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Open your project in the editor.
  2. At the top right, click Publish. The Publish window opens on the Publish tab.
  3. In the window's left menu, make sure Publish is selected. At the top, keep Production selected.
  4. At the bottom left of the window, on the same row as Publish to Production, find the red Unpublish site button.
  5. Click Unpublish site.

  1. A window titled Unpublish your site asks "Take your site offline?". It says: "Visitors to your site will find nothing there until you publish again. Your deployments are kept, and staging keeps working." If your site has a custom domain, the window names it, for example "Visitors to your site, mybakery.com included, …".
  2. Click Unpublish to confirm, or Cancel to keep your site online.

  1. Wait while the Unpublish button spins: TeleportHQ is taking every address offline. The window closes by itself when it's done.

Check that it worked

  • A message says "Your site is offline. Publish whenever you want it back."
  • In the Publish window, your TeleportHQ address, right below Production, shows Unpublished and is no longer a link. The After publishing: line and the Unpublish site button are gone.
  • Your TeleportHQ address and your custom domain no longer show your site. Open them in a private browser window to check.
  • On your dashboard, the project counts as not published: in the Filter menu, the Not published status lists it, and its card shows Not deployed instead of your TeleportHQ address. A card with a custom domain keeps showing the domain.

Bring your site back

To put a TeleportHQ site back online after an Unpublish, publish it again:

  1. Click Publish at the top right, and keep Production selected.
  2. If your site has a custom domain, keep Publish to custom domain ticked at the bottom of the window.
  3. Click Publish to Production.

Your site comes back at the same TeleportHQ address. Your custom domain stays connected while the site is offline, so the same publish puts the site back on it.

You can also bring back a version you already built, without a new publish: in Publish → Deployments, click Redeploy on a Production deployment, or Promote to Production on a staging one. See How to see and manage your deployments.

What Unpublish doesn't do

  • It doesn't delete your project. Your pages, files and data stay, and you keep editing as before. To delete the project, see How to delete a project.
  • It doesn't delete your deployments. They stay in Publish → Deployments. Opening that list doesn't put the site back online.
  • It doesn't touch staging. Your staging address keeps working. See How to test changes on a staging site before going live.
  • It doesn't remove your custom domain or your password. The domain stays connected, and password protection stays as you set it, ready for your next publish.
  • It doesn't hide a live site from search engines. An offline site has nothing to show. To keep the site online but ask search engines not to list it, use Show this site in search engines in Project settings (cog, bottom left) → SEO & social → Search engines.

Troubleshooting

I don't see the Unpublish site button The site isn't published to Production, a publish is still running, or Staging is selected at the top. Select Production, and wait until any publish finishes.

"Your site could not be taken offline." The message ends with the reason. "A publish is still running. Wait for it to finish, then unpublish." means a publish started elsewhere, for example by a collaborator: wait until it ends, then click Unpublish site again. "A site published to your own Vercel account is taken offline from Vercel." means the site is hosted on your own Vercel account: take it offline there.

My site came back online Someone published to Production again, redeployed a Production deployment, or made a staging build live. Each of these brings the site back. Click Unpublish site again if you still want it offline.

Why is my published site offline?

A published TeleportHQ site goes offline when someone clicks Unpublish site in the Publish window, the workspace's trial or subscription ends (TeleportHQ then removes every deployment and custom domain), a web app passes its 7-day window without a Web App slot, the custom domain's DNS isn't set up, or the project is deleted; the Publish window and the dashboard card show which one.
