How to organize files in folders

How to organize files in folders

To create a folder in the TeleportHQ Assets Manager, open Uploads, click + on the Public folder and choose Create Folder, then type a name. Move files into it by right-clicking them and choosing Move to folder, or by dragging them. Right-click any folder to rename, move, download or delete it.

Before you start

  • Folders work inside the Public folder and inside other folders you create. You can't create folders inside Private, Functions or the fonts folder.
  • Folder names are always lowercase.

Create a folder

  1. In the left sidebar, click the folder icon (tooltip Assets Manager).
  2. Click the Uploads tab.
  3. On the Public folder row, click + (tooltip Upload assets or create folders).
  4. Click Create Folder. A folder called new folder appears with its name ready to edit.

  5. Type a name, for example team-photos, and press Enter.

To create a folder inside another folder, right-click that folder and choose Create Folder.

Move files into a folder

  1. Right-click a file. To move several, hold Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) and click each one first, or hold Shift to select a range.
  2. Choose Move to folder (or Move Selection for several files).
  3. In the window, click through to the folder you want. Use the back arrow at the top left to go up a level. Where you can add a folder, a folder icon at the bottom left creates a new one there.
  4. Click Move here.

You can also drag files and folders onto another folder in the list. For more room, click Open side panel on a folder to see its contents in a larger view beside the sidebar.

Rename, download or delete a folder

Right-click the folder. You can also point at its row and click ⋯ (tooltip Options). Then choose:

  • Rename: type the new name and press Enter. You can also double-click the folder's name.
  • Move to folder: pick another folder in the window and click Move here.
  • Download: the folder downloads as assets.zip.
  • Delete: a window titled Delete all folders and contents shows everything that will be removed. Click Delete to confirm. Custom font files are kept.

The Public folder's own menu works on everything inside it: Move All Nested Assets to Folder, Download All Nested Assets and Delete All Nested Assets.

Find a file

Type part of a file or folder name in the Search box at the top of the Uploads tab. The folders that hold a match open by themselves. If a folder holds no match, you see No assets found in it. To list the biggest files first, set Sort files by: at the bottom of the tab to size.

Check that it worked

Your folder appears in the Uploads list, and the moved files are inside it. Elements that use a moved file keep working, in the editor and on your published site: they point to the file itself, not to its folder.

Troubleshooting

"Folders and assets cannot be moved into the 'fonts' folder." The fonts folder is managed in Project settings → Appearance → Fonts. Put your files in another folder.

"Root folders cannot be dragged." The Public, Private and Functions folders always stay at the top level.

"This folder is managed by Teleport and cannot be renamed.", "Fonts folder cannot be renamed." or "This folder cannot be renamed." Some folders are created and managed by TeleportHQ features, such as fonts or generated store reports. Leave their names as they are.

My folder name changed after I typed it TeleportHQ makes folder names lowercase and adds a number if the name is already used. The names authentication, admin-panel, e-commerce, blog and help-center are reserved, so they get a number too.

A moved file got a new name The target folder already had a file with the same name, so TeleportHQ added a number to the moved one.

Good to know

  • Download Selection on a mix of folders and files downloads the folders whole, but of the loose files it only includes images and videos. To download other loose files, select only files, or download them one at a time.
  • Moving files and renaming folders can't be undone with the editor's Undo. Move or rename them back instead.

What are the Private and Functions folders?

In the TeleportHQ Assets Manager, the Private folder holds developer text files such as next.config.js that are added to the top folder of your generated project, and you show it with the Private Folder switch in Project settings → Editor → Preferences → Advanced features; the Functions folder holds .js files that become server functions at /api/<name> when you publish.
