How to rename or delete files (and remove unused ones)

How to rename or delete files (and remove unused ones)

To rename a file in the TeleportHQ Assets Manager, double-click its name and type a new one. To delete it, right-click the file and choose Delete. To remove every unused file at once, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac), type > and run Delete all unused assets. Deleted files can't be restored.

Before you start

  • Deleting files needs a role with permission to delete assets.
  • Deleting a file that's used on a page can't be undone. Images and videos that used it show a "no image" placeholder, and background images that used it are removed.

Rename a file

  1. In the left sidebar, click the folder icon (tooltip Assets Manager), then the Uploads tab.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Rename. You can also double-click the file name.

The right-click menu of a picture in the TeleportHQ Uploads tab, with Rename, View linked nodes and Delete highlighted
  3. Type the new name, for example storefront-summer. The extension (such as .png) stays as it is.

A file's name open for editing in the TeleportHQ Uploads tab, with the name selected
  4. Press Enter. To keep the old name, press Esc instead.

Names can be 1 to 100 characters long, extension included.

Check where a file is used

Before you delete a file, right-click it and choose View linked nodes to list the elements that use it, or Highlight linked nodes to mark them on the canvas. Both are greyed out when nothing uses the file.

Images and videos that aren't used anywhere show a yellow icon with the tooltip "This asset is not being used in the project. It will be ignored when exporting or publishing."

A file whose size shows in orange or red, with a warning sign, is heavy for a web page. Before you delete it, see How to find files that slow down your page: you may only need a lighter copy.

Delete a file

  1. Right-click the file. To delete several, select them first with Ctrl-click (Cmd-click on Mac) and choose Delete Selection.
  2. Choose Delete. A window says Item will be permanently deleted: "It will no longer appear in any page or component. This action can't be undone!"
  3. Click Delete.

TeleportHQ also takes the file out of the CSS classes, products, blog posts and help center articles that used it.

Delete all unused files at once

  1. In the editor, press Ctrl+Shift+P (Cmd+Shift+P on Mac) to open the command palette with its commands. You can also press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P) and type >.
  2. Type unused.

The TeleportHQ command palette in command mode with "unused" typed, and the Delete all unused assets command highlighted
  3. Click Delete all unused assets. A window titled Items will be permanently deleted opens (Item will be permanently deleted when there is only one file).
  4. Click Delete.

Only images and videos that nothing uses are deleted: not a page, component, CSS class, product, blog post or help center article, and not a project setting such as your favicon. A link from an element you already deleted doesn't count as a use. Documents, audio, 3D models and text files are never removed this way. If there are no unused images or videos, nothing happens. See How to use the command palette.

Scroll videos: the command Clean up unused scroll video encodes deletes the unused versions of your scroll videos in the Scroll videos folder, after the same confirmation window. A clip folder left empty goes too. If there is nothing to remove, TeleportHQ says "No unused scroll video encodes — nothing to clean up".

Check that it worked

The file is gone from the Uploads list, and your project's storage use goes down.

Troubleshooting

"Your current role does not have permission to delete assets." Ask a workspace owner or admin to delete the file, or to change your role.

"Custom fonts files cannot be renamed." or "Custom fonts files can only be deleted from project settings." Font files are managed in Project settings → Appearance → Fonts. See How to upload your own fonts.

"Generated reports cannot be renamed." or "Generated reports are protected and cannot be deleted." Files in the reports folder are created by your store's reports and can't be changed here.

"Could not delete asset(s). Please try again." Refresh the editor and try again.

"Asset name cannot contain * : " ' | < > ? / ` ( )" Remove those characters from the new name.

"Asset name must be between 1 and 100 characters" Make the name shorter (the count includes the extension), or type at least one character.

Good to know

  • There's no way to replace an image, video or document file in place. Upload the new file, then point your elements to it. See How to add and replace images.
  • If you give a file a name that's already used in the folder, TeleportHQ adds a number to make it unique.
