How to track steps to a sale or signup (Funnels)

How to track steps to a sale or signup (Funnels)

A funnel in TeleportHQ Analytics measures a path you care about, for example Homepage → Cake menu → Order form, and shows how many visits reach each step and where visitors leave. To create one, open Growth → Analytics → Funnels, click New funnel, add at least two steps and click Create funnel.

Before you start

  • TeleportHQ funnels are part of Growth, on Trial, Pro and Premium. Your site must be published with visitor analytics on. See How to see who visits your site (Analytics).
  • Plan your steps in order. A step counts only when it happens in the same visit as the step before it, and after it. Each step is one of:
    • Visits page: a visitor opens a page.
    • Clicks element: a visitor clicks a link, a button or an element you marked for tracking.
    • Clicks tracked event: a visitor clicks an element you've given an event name, or your store reports one of its steps.

Create a funnel

  1. In the left sidebar, click Growth, then Analytics.
  2. Click the Funnels tab.
  3. Click New funnel. The New funnel window opens with two steps.

  1. In Funnel name, type a name. For example, Cake order journey.
  2. Under Steps, step 1 is set to Visits page, with your homepage as the page and Visit homepage as its label. Keep it, or change it.
  3. For step 2, choose what it tracks in its first box, then fill in the box below it:
    • Visits page: under Page, pick the page in Select a page.
    • Clicks element: under Element, type which element, for example #order-button.
    • Clicks tracked event: under Event name, type the event name, for example order-cake.
  4. Optional: in Label (optional), type the name the report shows for the step, for example Opened order form.
  5. To add a step, click + Add step and set it up the same way. A funnel has up to 8 steps.
  6. Click Create funnel. It stays greyed out until the funnel has a name and two steps are filled in.

Read a funnel

  1. On the Funnels tab, find the funnel's card. It shows the funnel's steps and how many there are. If you have many funnels, type in Search funnels….
  2. Click Open on the card.
  3. At the top, pick a date range. The funnel remembers the range you pick for the next time you open it.
  4. In the Conversion card, each step shows how many visits reached it and the share of all visits that started the funnel ("% of start"). The percentage between two steps is the share that went on from one step to the next.
  5. Click ← Back to return to the list.

Match pages and elements

These tips help each TeleportHQ funnel step match the right visits and clicks:

  • Many pages in one step. For Visits page, choose Custom path / wildcard… and type a pattern, for example /products/* for every page whose address starts with /products/. A page whose address changes per item, like a product page, already covers every item when you pick it from the list.
  • Which element is clicked. Clicks element counts clicks on links, buttons and any element marked with a data-tp-track attribute. The window's hint says so: "Matches a click on a link, button, or any element marked with data-tp-track, by #id, .class, tag, or a combination like button.cta." Match the element by its ID, for example #order-button, by a class, for example .add-to-cart, by tag, for example button for any button, or by a combination, for example button.cta. The ID or class must be on the clicked element itself, not on the box around it. A button that opens a link counts as a link (a) on your published site, so match it by its ID or class.
  • Named events (most reliable). For Clicks tracked event, give the element an attribute named data-tp-event, with your event name as its value, for example order-cake. Use letters, numbers, - and _, up to 64 characters. This also works for elements that aren't links or buttons.
  • Store steps. On a site with a TeleportHQ store, the store reports its own steps. Use them as event names in Clicks tracked event: view_item (a product is opened), add_to_cart, remove_from_cart, begin_checkout (the checkout page is opened) and purchase (an order is placed). For example, a funnel view_item → add_to_cart → purchase.

Give an element an ID or an event name

  1. On the canvas, select the link, the button or the element.
  2. In the right panel, find the Attributes section, near the top.
  3. For an ID, type it in ID, without the #. For example, order-button.
  4. For an event name, use the empty row at the bottom of Attributes: type data-tp-event in the first box (custom attr) and the event name in the second box (value), for example order-cake. Then press Enter.
  5. For an element that isn't a link or a button, and that you want to match with Clicks element, add a second row the same way: data-tp-track in custom attr and any word in value, for example yes.
  6. Publish your site, so visitors get the change.
The Attributes section of TeleportHQ's right panel, with 1 the ID field and 2 the custom attribute row numbered
  1. ID: the element's ID, used by Clicks element.
  2. custom attr and value: where you add data-tp-event and its name, used by Clicks tracked event.

Check that it worked

The new funnel appears as a card on the Funnels tab, with its number of steps. Open it to see the step counts. A funnel counts visits from the last 90 days, including visits from before you created it, so it can show numbers right away.

Troubleshooting

"Could not create the funnel. Please try again." Saving didn't work. Check your connection, then click Create funnel again.

"Couldn't load this funnel." / "Please try a different range or try again." Funnels work on date ranges of up to about 3 months. Pick Last 90 days or a shorter Custom range.

A step always shows zero The step doesn't match what visitors do:

  • Check the page address, ID or event name for typos, and publish after adding an ID or attribute.
  • Steps count in order, within one visit. A visitor who does step 3 before step 2, or on another day, doesn't count for step 3. Coming back from a different website or campaign link than the one the visit started from starts a new visit; coming back from paying or from signing in doesn't.
  • Clicks element with a class, or for an element marked with data-tp-track, only counts clicks made after you published your site with the current analytics script. Publish your site again, then give it time to collect clicks.

I can't remove a step A funnel needs at least two steps, so the remove button (tooltip Remove step) is greyed out when there are only two.

Delete a funnel

  1. On the funnel's card, click the trash button (tooltip Delete funnel). The Delete funnel window opens.
  2. Click Delete. The funnel and its settings are removed. Your visitor data isn't affected.

Good to know

  • Keep funnels short. Every extra step is another chance for someone to leave, and a short funnel shows the biggest leaks more clearly.
  • Store events in Google Analytics. If your TeleportHQ store also uses Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager, product views, add-to-cart, checkout and purchase events are sent there too. See How to add Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager.

No. TeleportHQ's built-in visitor analytics never sets cookies and, apart from recent order numbers on store sites, stores nothing in visitors' browsers unless they accept your cookie banner; it records anonymous page views and clicks, doesn't keep IP addresses with visit records, and deletes detailed visit records after 90 days.
