How to see who visits your site (Analytics)
TeleportHQ has built-in visitor analytics for your published site, with nothing to install. In the editor, click Growth in the left sidebar, then Analytics, and pick a date range. You see how many people visit, where they come from, which pages they view, what they click and whether they come back.
Before you start
- TeleportHQ visitor analytics is part of Growth, which you get on Trial, Pro and Premium. See What's in the Growth tab?.
- Your site must be published with TeleportHQ, and visitor analytics must be on. It's on by default. See How to turn visitor analytics on or off and choose tracked pages.
- You need a role that can edit the project.
- Visits appear within minutes. Visits from before analytics was on and published aren't recorded.
Steps
- In the left sidebar, click Growth. The first time you open it in a project, a Welcome to Growth! window offers a tour: click Show Me to take it, or Maybe Later.
- In the Growth panel, click Analytics ("See who visits your site"), below Marketing Studio. Analytics opens over the canvas, on the Overview tab.
- At the top right, pick a date range: Today (the last 24 hours), Last 7 days, Last 30 days (the default), Last 90 days or Custom. For Custom, choose the first and the last day in the two date boxes that appear. The Retention and Funnels tabs don't use this date range.
- In the column on the left, click a tab to see more detail: Overview, Audience, Acquisition, Behavior, Retention or Funnels.
- To close Analytics, click the close button at its top right (tooltip Close).
What each tab shows
Overview: "Key metrics & trends". A live bar shows how many visitors are on your TeleportHQ site right now, for example "2 visitors on your site right now", and the pages they're on. Below it are five cards. The info icon next to each card's name says how it's counted:
- Visitors: "Unique people who visited in this period. A visitor who has not accepted your cookie banner is recognised anonymously for one day only, so coming back on another day counts them again — a close estimate rather than an exact headcount."
- Page views: "Total pages loaded, including navigations between pages within your site. One visitor who views 5 pages counts as 5 page views."
- Visits: "Visits (sessions) — one continuous browsing session by a visitor. A new visit starts after 30 minutes without activity, or when the visitor arrives again from a different source — another website, or a link with different UTM tags. Coming back from a payment or sign-in page stays in the same visit."
- Avg. visit length: "Average time from the first to the last activity within a visit, across the visits that started in this period. Visits still in progress count too, up to their latest activity."
- Bounce rate: "Share of visits that viewed only one page and clicked no link or button. Visits still in progress count too, as they stand so far. Lower is usually better."
The Reading the overview tips below the tabs put the difference this way: "Visitors counts people; Visits counts trips. One person who comes back three times in one day is 1 visitor but 3 visits."
The percentage on a card compares the period you picked with the period of the same length right before it. You also see Visitors over time, Top pages and Top sources.
Audience: "Who your visitors are". Countries, Device types, Browsers, Operating systems and a map, Where your visitors are.
Acquisition: "Where they come from". Channels (Direct, Search engines, Social media, Other websites, Email, SMS), Where visitors come from (the websites that sent them) and Campaign links (UTM).
Behavior: "What they do on your site". A Pages table with Views, Visitors, Avg. time, Entries and Exits; Where visitors start; Most common moves between pages; and What visitors click (links and buttons).
Retention: "Returning visitors". Returning visitors by week and New vs returning. The Retention tab always shows the last 8 weeks, so it has no date range. Each row is the week visitors first came, and each column a later week; the weeks that haven't begun yet stay blank. These numbers only count visitors who clicked Accept on your cookie banner. See the Troubleshooting section below.
Funnels: "Conversion journeys". Measure how many visitors complete steps like Homepage → Product → Checkout. See How to track steps to a sale or signup (Funnels).
To edit a page from a TeleportHQ Analytics report, click the arrow (↗) next to it (tooltip Open page in editor).
Track your own campaign links
To see which post, ad or email brings visitors to your TeleportHQ site, add UTM tags to the links you share. For example:
https://sweet-crumbs.teleporthq.site/?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring-sale
Visits from that link show on the Acquisition tab under Campaign links (UTM), with the Campaign, Source and Medium. Until the first tagged visit arrives, the card reads "No campaign visits yet."
Links that the Marketing Studio creates are tagged for you, and the card shows the name of the campaign or post they came from, marked Campaign or Post. Click a campaign's name to open it in the Marketing Studio's campaign calendar. See What is the Marketing Studio?.
Check that it worked
Open your live site in another browser or on your phone, then look at the live bar on the Overview tab. Your visit appears within a minute or two.
Troubleshooting
"Publish your site to start" Your project has never been published. Click Publish project to open the Publish window. See How to publish your site.
Analytics shows no visitors Check these in order:
- In Growth Settings (the gear at the top of the Growth panel), Visitor analytics is on, and you published after turning it on.
- You're visiting the live site at its TeleportHQ address or at the custom domain you connected in TeleportHQ, not the editor preview. Visits from
localhostand from automated browsers aren't counted. - Your browser's ad blocker isn't blocking the visit.
"We couldn't load this data." Click Retry. If it keeps happening, check that your role lets you edit the project: the reports don't load for view-only roles.
"Growth is a paid feature" The workspace's trial or subscription has ended. Click Upgrade. See What happens when my trial or subscription ends?.
Reconnect next to the live count Live updates stopped after several failed tries. Click Reconnect.
"No visitor has accepted the cookie banner in the last … weeks." or Retention shows almost no returning visitors Without a cookie banner, TeleportHQ can't recognize a visitor on a later day. Add a cookie consent banner, so visitors who click Accept are counted as returning. Each week's new visitors then appear on the Retention tab as a row. See How to add a cookie consent banner.
A country shows as "Unknown" TeleportHQ looks up each visitor's country with a third-party location service, and couldn't work out that visitor's location. This can't be fixed afterwards.
A bank or a sign-in provider shows up under Acquisition Your live site still has an older analytics script. Publish your site again: TeleportHQ then keeps a visitor who comes back from paying or from signing in in the visit they were on.
Good to know
- Dates use your browser's time zone.
- Only page addresses are stored. Anything after
?in a page address is removed, except UTM campaign tags on the first page of a visit. Links to other websites that visitors click are the exception: their full address is recorded. - Data is kept for a limited time. Detailed visit records are deleted after 90 days. Hourly totals are kept for 14 months and daily totals for 26 months, so long date ranges still work. See Does TeleportHQ analytics use cookies?.
- Clicks are recorded automatically on links and buttons, with the first 64 characters of their text. To record clicks on other elements too, see How to track steps to a sale or signup (Funnels).
- Only sites TeleportHQ publishes report visits. TeleportHQ analytics counts visits on your site's TeleportHQ address and on the custom domain you connected in TeleportHQ. Code you download and host yourself, or publish with your own Vercel account, doesn't report visits. For those, use Google Analytics. See How to add Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager.
- Your data is deleted when your plan ends. When a trial ends or a subscription lapses, TeleportHQ deletes the visitor analytics of the workspace's projects.
