How to use free 3D models, game sprites and sounds

The TeleportHQ Assets Manager has free libraries beyond photos. The 3D tab offers 3D models from Poly Haven, Smithsonian, Game and Polygonal Mind (Poly Pizza is marked Coming soon). The Stock tab's Game library offers 2D game sprites, and the Audio tab offers sound effects. Search a library, then drag an item onto your page, or point at it and click its add button.

Before you start

  • These libraries are free on every plan.
  • Stock 3D models are copied into your project and count toward its storage. Sprites and sounds stay in the library they come from and don't use your project's storage.

Add a free 3D model

  1. In the left sidebar, click Assets Manager.
  2. At the top of the panel, click the 3D tab.
  3. In the row below the tabs, choose a library: Poly Haven, Smithsonian, Game or Polygonal Mind. If the panel is narrow, the row scrolls sideways.
  4. Browse the models, or type at least 3 letters in Search 3D models. For example, chair.
  5. Check the two labels at the bottom of each card. The first is the file size. The second, such as 12k tris, counts the model's triangles: the more triangles, the more detailed and the heavier the model.
  6. Drag the model onto the canvas. Or point at it and click the button in its middle.

A 3D model element appears on your page right away, showing the model's preview picture, while the model file is copied into your project in the background. If a 3D model element is already selected, the button replaces the model it shows instead. To change how the model is displayed, see How to add a 3D model.

The Poly Pizza library isn't available yet. Its tab shows a Coming soon card: "Thousands of free low-poly 3D models are on their way. Until then, pick from Poly Haven, Smithsonian, Game or Polygonal Mind."

Add a game sprite

  1. In the Assets Manager, click the Stock tab.
  2. In the row below the tabs, click Game.
  3. Type in Search game assets, for example coin. The line Assets found: N shows how many sprites match, and the matching packs open. Or click a pack's name to open it.
  4. Drag a sprite onto the canvas. Or point at it and click the small button in its top-right corner. It's added as an image.

The sprites are "Game assets by Kenney (CC0)", free to use in any project. If more than 300 sprites match your search, the packs stay closed and you see "Try to be more specific to automatically expand the matching packs."

Add a sound

  1. In the Assets Manager, click the Audio tab.
  2. Type in Search sounds, for example click. The line Sounds found: N shows how many match, and the matching packs open. Or click a pack's name to open it.
  3. Click the play button (tooltip Play) at the start of a row to listen. Click it again (Pause) to stop.
  4. Drag the sound onto the canvas. Or point at its row and click the button at the right end. It's added as an audio player.

If an Audio element is selected, the button replaces its sound instead.

To play a sound when a visitor clicks or hovers a button instead, see How to add audio and play a sound on click.

Check that it worked

The model, sprite or audio player appears on your canvas and is selected. To hear a sound on the page, open Preview.

Troubleshooting

"The model exceeds your plan's storage limits. This model needs X MB; your plan allows Y MB." The model is bigger than your plan allows, or your project doesn't have enough storage left. Pick a smaller model, or delete files you don't use. See Which files can I upload, and how big can they be?

A card's size label is dark orange That model is larger than your plan's size limit for 3D models (point at the label to read "Larger than your plan's size limit for 3D models"). Pick a model with a smaller size.

"A large model — it will take a while to load on your published site" This note shows when you point at the size label of a model over 25 MB. The model works, but visitors on slow connections wait longer. Pick a lighter model if you can.

"This model is not available under a commercial-friendly license." TeleportHQ only imports models you can use commercially. Pick another model.

"This model can't be imported right now. Please try another one." or "Could not import the 3D model. Please try again." The import failed and the new 3D model element was removed from your page. Try again, or choose another model.

"The 3D model provider is unavailable. Please try again later.", "Could not load 3D models. Please try again later." or "3D models are unavailable" The library couldn't be reached. Wait, then click Try again, or switch to another library.

"Game assets are unavailable" or "Sounds are unavailable" The library couldn't be reached. Check your connection and click Try again.

"No game assets yet" or "No sounds yet" The library didn't load any packs. Try again later. If it stays empty, write to hello@teleporthq.io.

Good to know

  • A stock model is only copied into your project once, even if you add it several times.
  • Stock 3D models can be up to 200 MB each, as long as they fit in your project's storage.
  • You can also upload your own .glb model in the Uploads tab, up to 30 MB. See How to upload images, videos and files.
  • AI 3D model generation is coming soon, so these libraries (or your own .glb file) are the way to add a model today. See How to generate videos and 3D models with AI.
