How to import a website from a ZIP file

To bring an existing HTML website into TeleportHQ, put its files in a ZIP file (up to 50 MB), open a project in the editor and click Import Project (ZIP) in the bottom toolbar, or drag the ZIP onto the canvas. TeleportHQ creates one page for each HTML file, uploads the images, videos and fonts, and turns links between the files into page links.

Before you start

  • Make a ZIP of your site's files. The ZIP must contain at least one .html file. TeleportHQ reads these files:

    • pages: .html, .htm
    • styles and scripts: .css, .js, .mjs
    • images: .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .svg, .webp, .ico, .avif
    • videos: .mp4, .m4v, .mov, .webm
    • fonts: .woff, .woff2, .ttf, .otf

    Other files are skipped.

  • Maximum ZIP size: 50 MB. Uploaded files also count toward your plan's storage limits. See Which files can I upload, and how big can they be?
  • Use a new blank project if you're moving a whole site, so the imported pages don't mix with existing ones. See How to create a new project.
  • The site should be plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, not a React, Vue or WordPress theme.
  • Page limits apply. On a trial, a project can have up to 200 pages. Pro and Premium have no page limit.
  • ZIP import is available on every plan.

Steps

  1. Open your project in the TeleportHQ editor.
  2. In the toolbar at the bottom of the canvas, click the ZIP icon (tooltip Import Project (ZIP)). Your computer's file window opens.

  1. Select your ZIP file and click Open.

You can also drag the ZIP file from your computer onto the canvas, or click the ZIP icon (tooltip Import a project from a ZIP archive) at the bottom of the HTML Import window.

What happens next depends on how many HTML files the ZIP has.

A ZIP with several HTML pages

  1. The window Import N pages from ZIP? opens. It says what TeleportHQ will do, for example: "We'll create 4 new pages, upload 12 assets, inline 2 stylesheets, and inline 1 script. "index.html" will be set as the home page."
  2. Check the list of pages.
  3. Click Import.

Progress messages appear, such as "Uploading 12 asset(s)…" and "Creating page 2 of 4: about…". When it's done, you see a summary like "Imported 4 pages · 12 asset(s) · 2 CSS file(s) inlined · 1 JS file(s) inlined".

A ZIP with one HTML page

TeleportHQ uploads the images and other files, adds the CSS and JavaScript to the page code, then opens the HTML Import window so you can review the code. Click Save to add it to the current page. See How to import HTML and CSS code.

Check that it worked

  • In the left sidebar, open the pages list. You see one page per HTML file. index.html became your homepage, and folders in the ZIP became page folders.
  • Links between your HTML files now point to the matching TeleportHQ pages.
  • Your images, videos and fonts are in the Assets Manager.

Troubleshooting

"ZIP too large (max 50 MB)." Make the ZIP smaller: compress large images, or remove videos and upload them separately later.

"No HTML file found in ZIP." The ZIP has no .html or .htm file. Check that you zipped the site's files, not a folder of only images or styles.

"ZIP is empty or contains no usable files." or "Could not open the ZIP file." The ZIP is empty, damaged, or not a real ZIP file. Create the ZIP again on your computer and retry.

"This ZIP would add N pages, but your plan allows at most M more. Reduce the ZIP or upgrade your plan." The project would go over its page limit. Remove some HTML files from the ZIP, delete pages you don't need, or upgrade your plan.

"Failed to create page "<name>". Import aborted." or "Multi-page import failed; created pages were rolled back." One page couldn't be created, so TeleportHQ undid the whole import and your project is as it was. Check that HTML file for broken markup, try importing it alone with Import HTML / CSS / JS, then import the rest.

My index.html was merged into my existing homepage If the project already has a homepage, TeleportHQ merges index.html into it instead of creating a new homepage. The confirmation window says "will be merged into your existing Home page." To avoid this, import into a new blank project.

The design looks different from the original Styles or elements TeleportHQ doesn't support may be dropped. Open the affected page and adjust it in the editor. Scripts don't run on the canvas; test them on the published site.

Good to know

  • CSS and JavaScript files are added into each page's code ("inlined"), not kept as separate files.
  • Files whose names start with a dot and macOS __MACOSX folders are skipped.
  • After importing, publish the site to see it live. See How to publish your site.

TeleportHQ accepts images (jpg, png, gif, svg, webp, ico), videos (mp4, m4v, mov), documents (pdf, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, zip), audio, .glb 3D models, fonts and text files; trial and Pro plans allow 10 MB per file and 1 GB per project, Premium allows 30 MB per file and 3 GB per project, and smaller files are flagged as heavy when they would slow a page down.
