How to create a new project (AI, template or blank)
In TeleportHQ, you create a project from your dashboard: click + New Project, then pick one of five cards: E-commerce, Web App, Bookings, Presentation Website or Blank project. Every card except Blank project opens a second panel where you choose Generate with AI or a template of that kind; while a kind has no templates yet, its card skips that panel and starts the AI setup straight away. The new project opens straight away, either in the AI setup steps or in the editor.
Before you start
- Project limits. A TeleportHQ trial workspace can hold 1 project. Pro and Premium workspaces have no practical limit. If your workspace is full, you see Workspace has reached project limit instead of the create panel. See How many projects can I have?.
- Expired workspaces. If the workspace's trial or subscription has ended, + New Project is dimmed and you can't create projects until the owner subscribes.
- Permissions. You need a role that can create projects (Owner, Admin or Designer). In a workspace on a paid plan, where folders are available, Designers can create projects only inside a folder they have access to, or anywhere while the workspace has no folders yet. With another role, + New Project is dimmed: "Your role in this workspace can’t create projects."
- Presentation website or web app? The choice matters. E-commerce, Web App and Bookings projects are web apps: they can't go back to being a presentation website, and their code can't be downloaded. Read What's the difference between a website and a web app? if you're not sure.
Steps
- Open your dashboard and click the workspace you want to use in the left sidebar, under WORKSPACES.
- At the top right, click + New Project. The Create Project panel opens.
- Pick one of the five cards. Hovering a card shows Start Building; click the card to choose it.
- E-commerce: "Products, cart, checkout, customer accounts and an admin panel".
- Web App: "A full app — auth, blog, e-commerce, workflows and the AI assistant".
- Bookings: "Rooms, appointments, tables, classes or rentals — booked online".
- Presentation Website: "Presents your business — no accounts, store or bookings; code you can download".
- Blank project: "An empty project — no AI generation, straight to the editor". The editor opens on an empty page with the Choose your plugins window. See If you picked Blank project below.
- A second panel opens, titled after the card you picked. (If there are no templates of that kind yet, the card skips this panel and starts the AI setup straight away.) Choose how to start:
- Click Generate with AI to describe your business and let AI build the project. See How to generate a website with AI, or for a store, web app or booking site, How to generate a store or web app with AI.
- On the Presentation Website panel, click Blank project for an empty website.
- Scroll to Or continue with a template and click Start Building on a template. Each panel lists only templates of its own kind. See How to start a project from a template.
- Wait a moment while the card shows a spinner. The panel closes and your new project opens.
If you picked Blank project
A TeleportHQ blank project opens in the editor on an empty page, with the Choose your plugins window: "Your project starts empty. Pick the plugins this project needs: they are enabled as soon as you continue, together with the plugins they rely on."
- Tick the plugins you need: Accounts, E-commerce, Blog, Help center, Bookings, Admin panel or AI chat assistant. E-commerce comes with Accounts, and Bookings comes with Accounts and Admin panel.
- Click Enable N plugins, for example Enable 2 plugins. Plugins make the project a web app, so TeleportHQ first asks you to confirm that, then switches them on.
To keep an empty website instead, click Continue without plugins. You can enable plugins later: open the Project Menu (the TeleportHQ logo at the top left), point to Edit and click Enable Plugins….
Check that it worked
Your new project opens in the TeleportHQ editor, or in the AI setup steps if you chose Generate with AI. Back on the dashboard, the project appears as a new card in the Projects grid of the workspace. A store's card shows a Store badge, and a booking site's a Bookings badge.
TeleportHQ gives new projects a random name, such as "Grizzled Joyous Ape". Projects started from a template use the template's name. To change it, see How to rename a project.
Troubleshooting
"Workspace has reached project limit" The workspace already holds as many projects as its plan allows. A trial allows 1 project, and archived projects count too. Delete a project you no longer need, or ask the workspace owner to upgrade. See Why can't I create a new project?.
+ New Project is dimmed: "This workspace’s subscription has ended. Resubscribe to create projects." The workspace's trial or subscription has ended. The workspace owner needs to subscribe to restore access. See What happens when my trial or subscription ends?.
+ New Project is dimmed: "You can only create projects inside folders where you have direct access" In a workspace on a paid plan, owners and admins create projects anywhere. Designers create them only inside a folder they have access to, or anywhere while the workspace has no folders. Open a folder you have access to, then click + New Project again. If there's no such folder, ask the workspace owner or an admin to give you access to one. See How to control who can see a project folder.
+ New Project is dimmed: "Your role in this workspace can’t create projects." Only Owners, Admins and Designers can create projects. Ask the workspace owner or an admin for the Designer role. See Why can't I create a new project?.
"A web app needs at least 20,000 tokens to generate. Add more tokens, or continue with a presentation website." Generating a store, a web app or a booking site with AI needs a larger AI token balance. TeleportHQ shows this message when you click Generate with AI on one of those panels, and the Purchase Tokens window opens. Buy tokens, start from a template of that kind, or pick Presentation Website instead. See What are AI tokens?.
"Could not create project. Please try again." Something went wrong while creating the project. Wait a moment and try again. If it keeps happening, write to hello@teleporthq.io.
Good to know
- A project is created as soon as you pick an option. If you choose Generate with AI and then leave the setup steps, the project still exists and still uses a project slot. On a trial, that's your only project.
- E-commerce, Web App and Bookings are permanent choices. These projects are web apps: they can't be turned back into a presentation website, can't have their code downloaded, and need a Web App slot to stay online after 7 days. Point at the i in a card's corner to read what that kind of project can and can't do. A Blank project or Presentation Website starts as a website. It becomes a web app only if you add web app features, such as user sign-in or workflows, for example by enabling plugins in the Choose your plugins window. See Why does my web app need a slot?.
- Under the cards, TeleportHQ may add a line such as "Web Apps, e-commerce stores and booking sites: Runs for 7 days, then needs a web app slot."
- Store templates can be narrowed by what the store sells: on the E-commerce panel, click Everything, Physical products, Digital products or Subscriptions above the templates.
- Privacy. New projects are Private when the workspace is on a paid plan, and Public otherwise. See How to make a project private, view-only or cloneable.
- Other ways to start a project: import a design with the Figma plugin (the Import from Figma card at the top right of the Create Project panel) or copy the demo project.
