How to make a project private, view-only or cloneable
In TeleportHQ, every project has a Public access setting in the Collaborators window. Open it by clicking the Public or Private label in the editor's top bar, then choose Private (only invited collaborators can open it), Can view (anyone with the link can look at it, without signing in) or Can clone (anyone with the link can copy it as a template). Private needs a Pro or Premium workspace.
Before you start
- Private needs a paid plan. In a workspace on the trial, projects can only be Can view or Can clone. See What's the difference between Trial, Pro and Premium?.
- You need the Owner, Admin or Designer role to change the setting.
- The link opens the editor, not your published site. It lets people look at your project in TeleportHQ. To share the live website, send its published address instead.
The three options
| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| Private | "Only collaborators can access". Only people you invited to the project or its workspace can open it. |
| Can view | "Anyone with the link can view, no sign-in required". Visitors can look around the editor but can't change anything. |
| Can clone | "Anyone with the link can use as a template". Visitors can make their own copy of the project in their workspace. |
Steps
- Open the project in the TeleportHQ editor.
- In the top bar, on the right, click the Public or Private label, right before Share. The Collaborators window opens. (Owners and Admins can also click Share.)
- Under Public access, open the list that shows the current option.
- Choose Private, Can view or Can clone. The change is saved straight away.
- To share the project, click Copy link. TeleportHQ shows "Link was copied in clipboard."
- Paste the link in an email or chat, for example to a client.
Check that it worked
The label in the top bar reads Private or Public. Can clone projects also read Public. Open the copied link in a private browser window to see what visitors see.
Troubleshooting
The window "This feature is not available on your current plan" opens You chose Private in a workspace that isn't on Pro or Premium, for example one on the trial. The window says the workspace "is currently on a Free plan"; it means the same thing. The workspace Owner can click Upgrade Now to subscribe. Other members see "Ask the workspace owner to upgrade to a paid plan to use this premium feature."
There's no Copy link button The project is Private. Private projects have no public link. Invite people instead. See How to invite someone to one project.
"Could not change project access type" Your role can't change this setting. The Editor role sees the options but can't save them. Ask the Owner, an Admin or a Designer.
I don't see the Public access section Viewers and Limited Viewers can't change the setting, so the Collaborators window doesn't show it to them.
Good to know
- On the trial, the Owner also sees "Upgrade to PRO to unlock private access and a whole lot of amazing features" in this window, and a PRO tag next to Private.
- New projects: in a Pro or Premium workspace, new projects start as Private. On the trial, they start as Can view.
- When a subscription ends, Private projects are switched to public. See What happens when my trial or subscription ends?.
- Visitors on a view-only link see a View only button and can ask for editing rights. See How to ask for editing rights on a view-only project.
- Visitors on a Can clone link see a bar at the top of the editor: "You are inside a cloneable project. Clone the project to make your own changes." Clicking Clone copies the project into their own workspace.
- What a TeleportHQ clone doesn't get. A clone never receives the project's Secrets (the API keys and passwords in Project settings → Data & code → Secrets): its editor lists each one it needs as missing. Its payment providers read Needs configuration because their keys aren't copied, and its forms lose their reCAPTCHA keys. A clone made into another workspace also loses the original's collaborators and its Google Analytics and Tag Manager IDs, and the original team's email addresses in the project are replaced by the new owner's.
- A clone into another workspace starts as Private, whatever this setting is. A duplicate inside the same workspace keeps it.
- The database. The clone gets its own copy of the project's TeleportHQ database: every table, and the content you wrote, such as products, posts, bookable items, opening hours and vouchers. Customer data never leaves your project: user accounts, orders, carts, bookings, calendars, comments and subscriptions. See Can I transfer a project to another account?.
