How to ask for editing rights on a view-only project

How to ask for editing rights on a view-only project

When a TeleportHQ project opens with a View only button in the top bar, you can look but not edit. Click View only, then Request editing rights. TeleportHQ emails the workspace Owner, who can then give you an editing role. You can send one request per project every 24 hours.

Before you start

  • Sign in first. If you opened a shared link without signing in, the menu reads "To ask for edit rights for this file, please login or signup". Sign in or create an account, then open the link again.
  • Check why the project is read-only. If the workspace's subscription has ended, the menu says so instead, and asking for rights won't help: everyone, the Owner included, is read-only until the Owner subscribes again. See Why can't I edit my project?.

Steps

  1. Open the project in the TeleportHQ editor.
  2. In the top bar, on the right, click View only (the button with the eye icon).
  3. In the menu, read "To edit this file, ask the owner for editing rights".
  4. Click Request editing rights.

Check that it worked

TeleportHQ shows "Permission change request sent." The View only menu now reads "Request for editing rights sent." and "You can send one request at every 24 hours."

The workspace Owner receives an email with your email address and the project's name. When the Owner or an Admin changes your role, your editor shows New project role and reloads with editing turned on.

Troubleshooting

"Request permission was send already." You already sent a request for this project in the last 24 hours. Wait, or contact the Owner directly.

"This workspace's subscription has ended, so its projects are read-only. Resubscribing restores editing." The project is read-only because the workspace's plan ended, not because of your role. Only the Owner can fix this, by subscribing.

Nothing happens after I send the request The Owner has to change your role by hand. There's no approve button in the email. Contact the Owner and point them to How to change a member's role or How to invite someone to one project.

View only showed up while I was editing Your connection to TeleportHQ dropped. The project stays read-only until it reconnects, then Share comes back. See Why did the editor say "Access denied", "New project role" or "You're offline"?.

Good to know

  • Editing roles can cost the Owner money. On Pro and Premium, giving you an editing role may add a paid editor seat to their workspace.
  • Want your own copy instead? If the project is set to Can clone, you can copy it into your own workspace and edit the copy. See How to make a project private, view-only or cloneable.

Why can't I edit my project? ("View only" or read-only)

A TeleportHQ project opens read-only when your role only allows viewing, the workspace's trial or subscription has ended, you opened a public or cloneable link, the editor lost its connection, or a teammate is editing the same element; the message you see tells you which, and each case has its own fix.

What can each role do? (Admin, Designer, Editor, Viewer)

TeleportHQ has six roles (Owner, Admin, Designer, Editor, Viewer and Limited Viewer); Owner, Admin, Designer and Editor can edit and use an editor seat, Viewers are free and read-only, and the Editor role can't publish, view code, edit components or see every page by default.

How to change a member's role

In TeleportHQ, the workspace Owner changes a member's role in Workspace Settings → Collaborators by picking a new role in the Role column; on Pro and Premium, moving someone to an editing role adds a paid seat, and making an editor read-only frees the seat as account credit.

How to invite someone to one project

In the TeleportHQ editor, click Share at the top right, type the person's email in Add email, pick a role and click Send invite; they get access to that project only, and on Pro and Premium an editing role may add a paid editor seat.

How to make a project private, view-only or cloneable

In the TeleportHQ editor, click the Public or Private label next to Share and choose Private (only collaborators), Can view (anyone with the link can look) or Can clone (anyone with the link can copy it as a template) under Public access; Private needs Pro or Premium.

I was invited to TeleportHQ: how do I get access?

TeleportHQ invitations have no accept button; if you already have an account with the invited email you have access straight away, and if you don't, sign up with exactly that email and the shared workspace or project appears in your dashboard under SHARED WITH ME.
