How to add or remove Google, GitHub or Microsoft sign-in
A TeleportHQ account can have several sign-in methods: a password, Google, GitHub and Microsoft. To add one, sign in with it using the same email address; TeleportHQ asks you to confirm your existing account once and then links them. To remove one, open Account Settings → General → Authentication Providers and click Unlink.
Before you start
- The new method must use the same email address as your TeleportHQ account.
- You can't remove your last sign-in method.
- There's no "add provider" button in Account Settings. Adding happens on the sign-in page.
Steps
Add a sign-in method
For example, you signed up with a password and want to use Sign in with Google too.
- If you're signed in to TeleportHQ, log out: on the dashboard, point at your name at the top of the left sidebar, click the ⋯ icon that appears, then click Log Out.
- On the Sign in page, click Sign in with Google (or GitHub, or Microsoft).
- Sign in to that account on the page or in the pop-up window that opens.
- TeleportHQ says your email already has an account and asks you to confirm it. This is a one-time step:
- If your account uses a password, type your current password and click Sign in on the page (or Submit in the pop-up window).
- If your account uses another provider, click the button to sign in with that provider.
- The message "Account linked successfully. Logging you in with the new provider." may appear, and the dashboard opens.
From now on, you can sign in with either method. Linking only adds the new method: your password keeps working, even though the pop-up window says the password login method will be removed.
Remove a sign-in method
- On the dashboard, at the top of the left sidebar, point at your name and click the ⋯ icon that appears.
- Click Account Settings. The General tab opens.
- Scroll to Authentication Providers ("These are the providers you are using to sign in"). Each method is listed by its technical name:
google.com,github.com,microsoft.comorpassword. - Click Unlink next to the method you want to remove. It's removed right away, with no confirmation. The message "Account unlinked" appears.
Check that it worked
In Account Settings → General → Authentication Providers, the list shows the methods you now have. Sign out and sign in with the remaining method to be sure it works.
Troubleshooting
There's no Unlink button Your account has only one sign-in method. TeleportHQ doesn't let you remove the last one. Add another method first.
"Could not unlink provider." Try again. If it keeps failing, sign out, sign back in, and retry.
"Password is incorrect" or "Wrong password" while linking Type the password of your existing TeleportHQ account. If you forgot it, reset it first. See How to reset or change your password.
"Password cannot be empty" Type your current password in the field, then click Submit.
"We could not link the account. Please try again." or "We could not link the Microsoft account. Please try again." Linking failed. Sign in with your original method, sign out, and try again. The second message names Microsoft even when you used another provider.
"Too many unsuccessful sign in attempts. Please try again later" Wait a few minutes before trying again.
Good to know
- Unlinking GitHub also removes your saved GitHub access, which disconnects TeleportHQ from GitHub. To export to GitHub again, save a new token. See How to export your project to GitHub.
- You can unlink the method you signed in with, as long as another method remains. You stay signed in.
- Changing the email address of your account isn't available. See How to change your name, theme or email address.
