Why do my menu links change when I add or rename a page?
TeleportHQ keeps your site's menu and footer in sync with your pages. When a component is marked as your Navigation or Footer, TeleportHQ asks AI to add a link each time you add a page, changes the link text when you rename the page, and asks what happens to the links when you delete the page. You can switch adding off, and choose the answer offered first on deletion, in Project settings → Editor → Preferences → Editing, under Links.
What TeleportHQ does to your menu links
Automatic menu links in TeleportHQ react to what you do with pages:
| You... | TeleportHQ... |
|---|---|
| Add a page (Blank Page, Generate Page with AI or the command palette) | Asks AI to add a link to the page in your navigation, then in your footer, styled like your existing links. A message such as Asking the AI agent to add a navlink for "Page" to Navigation and Footer… shows while it works. It takes a few seconds and uses AI tokens. |
| Add a page when the navigation already shows 5 or more links side by side | Puts the new link in a More dropdown in the navigation, without AI, with the message Navlink for "Page" added to the "More" dropdown in the navigation. |
| Rename a page | Changes the link text in the navigation and footer, where it was exactly the old page name. This doesn't use AI. |
| Delete a page from its menu in the Pages list | Asks what happens to every element that links to the page: point them to another page, keep them without the link, or remove them. Remove them removes the links in the navigation and footer, with a message such as Removed 2 navlinks for deleted page; other buttons and links stay, without their link. See How to rename, duplicate or delete a page. |
| Duplicate a page | Nothing. No link to the copy is added. |
Links anywhere else on your site, such as a button in a hero section, are never added automatically.
When it happens (and when it doesn't)
Automatic menu links in TeleportHQ only work when all of these are true:
- A component has the Navigation or Footer role. Sites built with the AI Website Builder get these roles automatically, and so does a navigation bar or footer you add from the premade sections. In other projects, you assign them. See How to mark a component as your navigation, footer or logo.
- The switch is on. All three switches are on at first.
- For new pages: your workspace has at least 1,000 AI tokens available. With fewer, the page is created and no link is added. See What are AI tokens, and how many do I get?
TeleportHQ doesn't add links for pages it creates itself, such as Terms & Conditions, privacy and cookie policies, the 404 page, sign-in pages and store or blog pages. Projects the AI built with a dashboard layout don't get automatic links either.
TeleportHQ also doesn't add a link for a details page, a page that shows one item from your data (for example, one product or one booking), because a menu link would open it with no item. The one exception is the signed-in visitor's own page, such as a "My profile" page. If a page becomes a details page while the AI is still adding its link, TeleportHQ removes the new navigation and footer links to it again. See How to create a page for each item (details pages).
The link is requested before you name the page
When you add a page in TeleportHQ, the link request goes out at once, while the page is still called Page. Renaming the page updates only links that already exist. So if you rename the page before the AI finishes, the new link can keep the text Page. Select the link on the canvas and type the right text. A page you name 404 or Terms yourself gets a link too, because it was called Page when the link was requested.
What happens when you undo or delete a new page
Each link the AI adds in TeleportHQ is its own undo step, and Undo takes back the newest change first.
- Undo after the links appeared: the links arrived after the page, so Undo removes them first: the footer link, then the navigation link. Keep clicking Undo until the page is gone too.
- Undo or Delete before the AI finished: TeleportHQ doesn't cancel the link request. The links still arrive a few seconds later, after the page is gone, and they stay: a link called Page in your navigation and footer that doesn't lead to the page you removed. Open the navigation (or footer) component, select the link and press Delete.
- Generate Page with AI, then Cancel: the empty page already exists, so its links are requested too. To remove the page and its links together, wait until the links appear, then delete the page from the Pages list.
- Delete from the Pages list: the window that asks about the page's links removes, keeps or re-points them in the same step as the page. One Undo brings back the page and its links together.
The "Navigation and Footer" window
The first time you add a page in a TeleportHQ project where no component has the Navigation or Footer role, a window titled Navigation and Footer appears. It explains that assigning these roles turns on automatic link management and protects those components from being deleted by accident. It offers three buttons:
- Autodetect: TeleportHQ looks through your components and marks the ones that look like a navigation bar and a footer. If it finds both, you see Navigation and Footer components were detected and marked successfully. If it finds nothing suitable, you see No suitable Navigation or Footer components were found. You can assign roles manually by right-clicking a component in the sidebar.
- Show Me How: a short guided tour of assigning the roles yourself.
- Close: dismiss the window.
The window shows once per project for each person. In a project the AI built, a panel titled Your Navigation or Your Footer appears instead, the first time you open that component.
How to turn automatic menu links on or off
- At the bottom of the left sidebar, click the Project settings cog.
- Under Editor, click Preferences, then Editing.
- Scroll to Links.
The Links section has three switches for automatic menu links:
- Create navigation links for new pages: add a link to each new page in the navigation.
- Create footer links for new pages: add a link to each new page in the footer.
- Remove links when a page is deleted: when you delete a page from its menu, the window offers Remove them first while this is on, and Keep them without the link while it's off. When you delete a page with the Delete key, this switch decides on its own whether the navigation and footer links go.
Renaming always updates the link text; it has no switch. These switches are your own preferences in this project: they apply to the pages you add or delete, not to your collaborators' changes.
