How to compare your site with competitors
A TeleportHQ competitor benchmark measures your live site next to similar websites and explains where they do better. In the editor, open Growth → SEO & Performance → Competitors and click Run benchmark. AI finds competitors for you, and you can add your own. You get side-by-side scores, a plain-language summary and a to-do list you can hand to the AI Assistant.
Before you start
- Plan and role. Competitor benchmarks are part of Growth, which comes with the Trial, Pro and Premium plans. You need the Owner, Admin or Designer role.
- AI tokens. Finding competitors and writing the to-do list use AI tokens. See What uses AI tokens, and how much?.
- A published site, without a password. On the TeleportHQ trial, every publish puts your site behind a password, so competitor benchmarks work once the workspace subscribes and you remove the password. See How to publish your site.
- Limits. You can run 2 benchmarks per day per project, and one per published version.
Add your own competitors (optional)
- In the left sidebar, click Growth.
- Click SEO & Performance, then Competitors in the list on the left.
- In the Competitors card, click Add competitor.
- The Add competitor window opens. In Name, type the business name, for example
Crumb & Co. The name is optional. - In Website, type its address, for example
crumbandco.com.
- Click Add competitor. The site appears as a chip marked Added.
To remove a site you added, click the × on its chip. Click a chip's name to open that site in a new tab.
Run the benchmark
- On the TeleportHQ Competitors tab, click Run benchmark. (After the first benchmark, the button reads Run again.)
- Wait while TeleportHQ goes through Finding competitors, Checking availability, Measuring sites and Writing your to-do list. This can take a few minutes. You can open another tab of SEO & Performance in the meantime.
- Read the results. Sites the AI found appear in the Competitors card, marked AI.
Read the results
The TeleportHQ benchmark report has four parts.
Scores vs competitors shows Google PageSpeed scores from 0 to 100 for Performance, SEO, Accessibility and Best practices, for Your site and each competitor:
- Desktop and Mobile: which device the scores are for.
- Your site: your own scores, at the top.
- A competitor: click its row to see details, such as its homepage title length and whether it uses structured data.
How competitors out-rank you explains the biggest gaps in plain language. Your prioritized to-do list turns them into actions, the most important first:
- How competitors out-rank you: the summary.
- The area and the effort of each action: for example Content and Quick effort (or Moderate or Involved).
- Fix with AI: sends the action to the AI Assistant, which starts on it right away; the action then shows ✓ Handled by AI. Go to page opens the page in the editor instead.
Past benchmarks lists your earlier reports. Click one to see it again and follow your progress.
Check that it worked
After you fix items from the to-do list, publish your site, then click Run again to compare the new scores.
Troubleshooting
"You have already run a report on the current published version. Publish your latest changes to run a new one." Publish your site again, then run a new benchmark.
"Daily competitor report limit reached — you can run 2 per day per project. The counter resets at midnight UTC." Try again after midnight UTC.
"Competitor reports cannot run on password-protected sites. Make the site public first: remove the password in the Publish window, which on a trial takes a subscription." On Pro or Premium, click Remove under Password Protection in the Publish window while you run the benchmark. On the trial, the password can't be removed: the benchmark works after the workspace subscribes. See How to password-protect your site.
"Your published site could not be reached. Publish the project and try again." Check that your site is online, publish again, and retry.
"That doesn't look like a valid website address.", "That's your own site — add a competitor's website instead." or "That competitor is already on the list." Check the address in Website. Type only the site's address, for example crumbandco.com.
"You can add up to 10 competitors." Remove a site you added before you add another.
A competitor shows "–" instead of scores Google PageSpeed couldn't measure that site: it may have timed out, blocked the test or been offline. Its other details may still be there.
"The competitor report failed. Please try again in a few minutes." or "The competitor report stopped responding. Please run it again." Something went wrong on the way. Run the benchmark again later.
Good to know
- Up to 10 competitors per benchmark. Sites you add are always included; AI fills the rest. TeleportHQ reads up to 3 pages of each site.
- Sites you add are saved with the benchmark. If you reload the editor before you run it, add them again.
- Scores measure your live site. Changes in the editor count only after you publish and run the benchmark again.
- For a full list of your own issues, run a Site Health audit. See How to check your site's SEO health.
