How SEO works in TeleportHQ

SEO (search engine optimization) is everything that helps people find your site on Google and other search engines. In TeleportHQ, SEO works in two layers. First, the settings that shape how each page looks to search engines: titles, descriptions, social images, schema markup, sitemap, robots.txt and redirects, in Page SEO Settings and in Project settings → SEO & social. Second, the checks: the editor's Issues window lists broken links, and Growth → SEO & Performance audits your live site and helps you fix problems, often with AI.

What TeleportHQ does for you automatically

TeleportHQ handles the technical basics of SEO when you publish, without any setup:

  • A title and description on every page. If you leave a page's fields empty, TeleportHQ uses your site-wide defaults, and falls back to the page name plus the site title for the title.
  • A canonical address on every page. A canonical URL is a tag that tells Google which address is the "real" one for a page, so copies don't compete with each other. Each page points to its own address while Use Self Canonical URLs is on, as it is by default.
  • A sitemap.xml file that lists your pages for search engines, including one address per item on details pages (for example, one per product). Pages you hide from Google and admin panel pages are left out. On a multilingual site, it also lists each page's translations. On a site with a Blog or Help Center, sitemap.xml names a sitemap for your pages and one for your articles, which lists new articles without publishing again.
  • A robots.txt file that tells search engines they may visit every page, with a link to your sitemap.
  • An llms.txt file (on Trial, Pro and Premium) that describes your site to AI assistants like ChatGPT. On a site with a Blog or Help Center, llms.txt lists your articles by category, and llms-full.txt holds every article in full.
  • Schema markup, also called structured data (small pieces of hidden code, called JSON-LD, that describe your business, your website and each page, with its products, blog posts, help articles or FAQs, to Google and AI assistants). This can help your pages show richer results. You can also give a page schema markup of its own, written with AI. See How to add schema markup (structured data) to your pages.
  • Social sharing tags, so a link to your page shows a title, description and image on Facebook, LinkedIn or X.
  • Only one address in search results. Staging addresses are always kept out of search engines. With a custom domain, your TeleportHQ address sends visitors to your domain and asks search engines not to list it.

All of these reach your live site only when you publish. See How to publish your site.

The SEO settings you control

TeleportHQ SEO settings live in two places.

Per page: Page SEO Settings. In the Pages list, right-click a page (or click the … at the end of its row) and click Page SEO Settings. The same fields are above the canvas, under Page settings → SEO. Here you set:

For the whole site: Project settings → SEO & social. Click the Project settings cog at the bottom of the left sidebar, then SEO & social. It has two parts:

  1. Search engines: the default Meta Title and Meta Description for pages that don't have their own, Show this site in search engines, Automatically Generate Sitemap, Robots.txt, LLMS.txt, Use Self Canonical URLs, Keep Schema Markup Up To Date and Custom Redirects. It shows the sitemap and llms.txt your next publish writes. See How to set up your sitemap, robots.txt and llms.txt.
  2. Social sharing: the image and description shown when someone shares a link to your site.

Both save on their own as you change them. The browser-tab icon (favicon) is in Project settings → General. See How to change your project's name and favicon.

Hide a test site. Show this site in search engines is on for every site. Turn it off for a test or demo site: from your next publish, every address of the site asks search engines not to list it. See How to hide a page from Google, set a canonical URL or redirect a page.

The SEO checks

Broken links, in the editor. When a button or link on your site leads to an address your site doesn't have, a yellow issues button such as 1 issue appears at the top left of the TeleportHQ editor. The Issues window lists each broken link and takes you to it. It works before you publish. See How to find and fix broken links on your site.

SEO & Performance, in Growth. The SEO & Performance tools in the TeleportHQ Growth tab test your published site and tell you what to fix, in plain language. They need a published site and a Trial, Pro or Premium workspace.

A good order to work in

If you're new to SEO, this order gets the most out of TeleportHQ with the least effort:

  1. Set a site-wide Meta Title and Meta Description in Project settings → SEO & social → Search engines.
  2. Give your most important pages their own title and description.
  3. Add a social image for the whole site in Project settings → SEO & social → Social sharing.
  4. Fix any broken links the Issues window lists.
  5. Publish your site.
  6. Run a Site Health audit and fix what it finds.
  7. Connect Google Search Console, then check Keywords after a few weeks.

Good to know

  • SEO settings only affect your published site. The editor canvas doesn't show meta tags. After any SEO change, publish again.
  • Search engines take time. Google can take days or weeks to notice changes. Publishing doesn't make Google re-read your site right away.
  • Blog posts and multilingual sites have their own SEO options. See How to set SEO for a blog post and How URLs and SEO work on a multilingual site.
  • Page SEO settings are free on every plan. The Growth audit tools and llms.txt need a Trial, Pro or Premium workspace. See What's in the Growth tab?.
  • Schema markup written with AI uses AI tokens, and so does keeping it up to date before a publish or a Next.js or React export, while Keep Schema Markup Up To Date is on. See How to add schema markup (structured data) to your pages.
