How to choose the image and text shown when your page is shared

When someone shares a link to your TeleportHQ site on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp or X, a preview card shows an image, a title and a description. This preview is called Open Graph. Set a default image and description for the whole site in Project settings → SEO & social → Social sharing, and change the image or text for one page in Page SEO Settings → Open Graph Settings. Changes show after you publish.

Before you start

  • Open Graph settings are available on every TeleportHQ plan. You need to be signed in to upload images.
  • Use an image in a wide 1.9:1 shape (for example, 1200 × 630 pixels) or a square 1:1 shape.
  • Generate with AI uses AI tokens. See What uses AI tokens, and how much?.

Set a default sharing image for the whole site

  1. In the TeleportHQ editor, at the bottom of the left sidebar, click the Project settings cog.
  2. In the Project settings panel, under Site, click SEO & social.
  3. Click Social sharing. Its settings open next to the list, under the heading Open Graph.
  4. In OG Description, type a short summary of your site, up to 200 characters. For example, Custom cakes and fresh pastries, baked daily in Austin.
  5. Under OG Image, click Browse files and choose your image. TeleportHQ accepts GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG and WEBP.

The settings save on their own a moment after each change. There is no Save button. To remove the image, click its preview.

Change the preview for one page

  1. In the left sidebar, click the layers icon (tooltip Pages, Components & Tree View).
  2. In the Pages list, right-click the page. You can also click the … button at the end of its row.
  3. Click Page SEO Settings.
  4. Scroll to Open Graph Settings.
  5. Next to Image, click Upload and choose a PNG, JPEG or GIF image. Or click Generate with AI to create one from the page content.
  6. Optional: to use a different title or description than Google sees, untick Use the same title and description as defined in the Meta settings.
  7. In Title, type the sharing title (up to 70 characters). In Description, type the sharing text (up to 200 characters).
  8. Publish your site. See How to publish your site.

Page settings save when you click outside a field. There is no Save button. Once a page has an image, Upload reads Replace, and a trash button removes the image.

What each preview shows

For each page of your TeleportHQ site, the preview uses the first value that is set:

  • Image: the page's Image, then the site's OG Image.
  • Title: the page's Open Graph Title, then the page's Meta Title, then the page name plus your default meta title.
  • Description: the page's Open Graph Description, then the site's OG Description, then the page's Meta Description, then your default meta description.

So a site-wide OG Description is shown before a page's own Meta Description. To give one page its own sharing text, untick Use the same title and description as defined in the Meta settings on that page and fill in its Description.

The OG Title field in Social sharing isn't used in any page's preview: each page's sharing title comes from its own settings, as listed above.

Check that it worked

After you publish, paste your page address into a link preview tool, such as the LinkedIn Post Inspector or Facebook Sharing Debugger. The preview shows your image and text. Social networks keep old previews for a while, and these tools let you refresh them.

Troubleshooting

"You do not have enough tokens to generate an Open Graph image." Your workspace is low on AI tokens. Upload your own image instead, or buy tokens. See How to buy more AI tokens.

"Could not generate an Open Graph image. Please try again." The AI didn't return an image. Wait a moment and try again.

"Open Graph image generated but could not be saved to assets." The image was created, but TeleportHQ couldn't store it in your project files. Try again, or upload an image yourself.

"The provided file is not a supported image format." In Social sharing, use a GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG or WEBP image.

"The title displayed on social media platforms should not exceed 70 characters. You currently have N characters." Shorten the page's sharing title. It isn't saved until it's 70 characters or fewer.

"The description can be up to 200 characters." Shorten the site-wide OG Description. It isn't saved until it's 200 characters or fewer.

My old image still shows when I share the link Check that you published after the change. Then refresh the preview in the social network's link preview tool.

Good to know

  • AI images are saved to your assets. Generate with AI stores the new image in your project's Assets Manager.
  • Deleting a page image deletes the file. The trash button removes the image from the page and from your assets.
  • A Site Health audit checks sharing images. It flags pages with an incomplete preview and a site with no sharing image, and can fix both with AI. See How to fix SEO issues with AI.
