How to duplicate a project (and reuse it like a template)
To duplicate a project in TeleportHQ, go to your dashboard, open the ⋯ menu on the project's card and click Clone, then confirm with Clone project. You can also click the project name at the top of the editor and choose Duplicate. The copy is created in the same workspace, named "Copy of" plus the original name, and opens in the editor. Cloning is also how you reuse one of your projects as your own template.
Before you start
- The copy is a new project, so the workspace needs room for one more. A trial workspace holds only 1 project, so you can't duplicate a project on a trial. See How many projects can I have?.
- You need a role that can edit projects in the workspace, such as Owner, Admin or Designer.
- Archived projects and projects under Shared projects can't be cloned from the dashboard.
Duplicate from the dashboard
- On your TeleportHQ dashboard, find the project you want to copy.
- Hover the card and click its ⋯ menu.
- Click Clone. A window asks you to confirm, for example "Are you sure you want to clone 'Sunny Bakery' project?"
- Click Clone project. The copy is created and opens in the editor.
Duplicate from the editor
- In the TeleportHQ editor, click the project name at the top center.
- Click Duplicate. The editor reloads into the copy.
Check that it worked
Back on your TeleportHQ dashboard, a new card appears named Copy of followed by the original name, for example "Copy of Sunny Bakery". A copy made from the dashboard is saved in the folder you have open. A copy made with Duplicate in the editor is saved at the top level of the workspace, outside any folder. To give it a better name, see How to rename a project.
What's copied, and what isn't
Copied to the new TeleportHQ project:
- All pages, components and styles.
- Uploaded files in the Assets Manager.
- Forms. The copy gets its own forms: new submissions go to the copy, not to the original, and use the same notification emails.
- The project's database: every table, and the content you wrote yourself, such as products and their variants, blog posts, what can be booked with its opening hours, vouchers, shipping and tax rates, and the tables of a web app.
- Languages, and whether the project is a website or a web app. A store's copy keeps its Store badge on the dashboard, and a booking site's copy its Bookings badge.
- The plugins that are switched on.
- The project's privacy setting.
Not copied:
- Published sites and deployments. The copy starts unpublished.
- The custom domain and the GitHub connection.
- Collaborators you invited to the original project.
- Secrets, such as API keys and passwords. Add the ones the copy needs in Project settings → Secrets. See How to store API keys as secrets.
- Payment provider set-ups. In the copy, each payment provider shows as not set up until you enter its keys again.
- reCAPTCHA keys. The copy's forms use TeleportHQ's built-in captcha until you add your own keys again.
- The AI assistant chat's provider key.
- Data your visitors and customers created: your site's user accounts, carts, orders, bookings, comments, subscriptions and the emails your site sent. The files of digital products stay with the original too.
- Form submissions the original already received.
- Push notification keys. To send push notifications from the copy, open Project settings → Push notifications in the copy and click Create new keys.
- Add-ons such as Web App slots or language slots.
Reuse a project like a template
TeleportHQ doesn't have a "save as template" option, but cloning gives you the same result. Build a starter project once, with your navigation, footer, colors and components, and clone it each time you start a new site. Every clone counts as a project in the workspace.
To give a copy to someone in another account or workspace, share a Can clone link. See Can I transfer a project to another account?.
Troubleshooting
"Workspace has reached project limit" The workspace has no room for another project. Delete a project or upgrade the workspace. See How many projects can I have?.
"Not enough language slots" The project uses extra languages, and your workspace doesn't have enough free language slots for the copy. Click Clone without languages to copy the project in its main language only, or Cancel and buy more language slots first. See How to buy extra language slots.
"Could not check this workspace’s plan. Please try again." The editor couldn't check whether the workspace has room for the copy. Wait a moment and click Duplicate again.
"Could not clone project. Please try again." Something went wrong while copying. Wait a moment and try again.
The copy opens without its products, blog posts or bookable items TeleportHQ copies the original project's database into the copy. When that can't be done at once, the editor creates the copy's tables the first time you open it and fetches their content from the original. If that fails too, the tables stay empty. The editor shows no message; TeleportHQ's error reports record "Could not copy the rows of the project this one was cloned from". Wait about five minutes, then close the copy and open it again: TeleportHQ tries again, and only fills tables that are still empty, so nothing is added twice. Keep the original project until the copy has its content, because the content is read from it. If it's still missing, write to hello@teleporthq.io. Orders, bookings and user accounts are never copied, as listed in "What's copied, and what isn't".
Good to know
- Cloning a web app creates another web app. The copy needs its own Web App slot to stay online after 7 days. See Why does my web app need a slot?.
- Clones of your own projects don't count toward the template limit. Only templates from the TeleportHQ gallery do.
- For saving versions of the same project, use backups instead of clones. See How to back up and restore your project.
