How to edit your website by chatting with the AI Assistant

To edit your website with the TeleportHQ AI Assistant, click AI Assistant above the top right of the canvas. Select the element you want to change, type your request in plain words, for example Make this button rounded and orange, and press Enter. The assistant makes the change on your page and shows a summary card when it's done.

Before you start

Steps

  1. In the TeleportHQ editor, above the top right of the canvas, click AI Assistant. The chat opens on the right side of the editor.
  2. On the canvas, click the element or section you want to change. Its name appears as a chip above the message box.

  3. In the message box, type what you want. For example: Make the headline bigger, and add more space between the three feature cards.
  4. Press Enter to send. (Press Shift+Enter for a new line.)
  5. Wait while the assistant works. A status such as Thinking… or Preparing edits… shows what it's doing.
  6. Read the result. Each change shows as a line with a green check, for example Change the selected hero heading's text color to orange, and the assistant says what it changed.

With nothing selected, the assistant works with the whole visible page, so describe clearly which part you mean. See How to point the AI Assistant at a specific element or page.

Check that it worked

The change shows on the canvas right away. While the assistant is editing, the canvas shows AI is editing this page — manual changes may conflict. Wait for it to finish before you edit the same page by hand.

Element names in the assistant's reply are links. Click one to select that element on the canvas.

Stop the assistant

To stop a request in the TeleportHQ AI Assistant, click the orange square (Stop generation) that replaces the send button. You can also click × (Stop this edit) on the canvas notice. Changes made before you stopped are kept.

Generating a new page or component can't be stopped once it has started.

Keep separate chats for separate tasks

Start a new TeleportHQ AI Assistant chat whenever you switch tasks, for example one for the homepage and one for the contact form. The AI then doesn't mix up instructions, and each message costs fewer tokens.

  • Start a chat: at the top of the AI Assistant, click New (tooltip New chat). The chat opens in a temporary tab shown in italics. Double-click the tab to keep it.
  • Open an older chat: click the chat name at the top to open your chat history. Search by name, or sort by Last Accessed, Name or Messages.
  • Rename a chat: in the history, click the pencil (Rename), type a name (up to 50 characters) and press Enter.
  • Delete a chat: in the history, click the trash icon, then Delete. This can't be undone. You can't delete the chat you have open or a chat that is still running.
  • Branch a chat: hover a message you sent and click the fork icon (Fork — branch a new chat from this point).

Closing a tab doesn't delete the chat. You can run up to 3 chats at the same time.

Troubleshooting

"Not enough tokens to perform operation." Your workspace is out of AI tokens. Buy tokens or wait for your monthly allowance. See What happens when I run out of AI tokens?.

"Up to 3 conversations can run at the same time. Wait for one to finish before starting another." Three chats are already working. Wait for one to finish.

"Another message is still running in this conversation. Wait for it to finish (or for its tab to time out) and try again." Each chat handles one message at a time. Wait, or send your message in a new chat.

"This conversation is still running. Stop it before closing its tab." Click Stop generation first, then close the tab.

"I had to stop: this request exceeded the 18-minute time limit for a single operation." The request was too big. Changes made before the stop were kept. Split the rest into smaller requests.

"Failed to apply changes" or "An error occurred. Please try again." Send the message again. If it keeps failing, rephrase it, select a smaller part of the page, or start a new chat.

The AI Assistant says the chat is too long See Why does the AI Assistant say the chat is too long?.

The style panel disappeared While the AI Assistant is open, it takes the place of the style panel on the right. Click Back To Dev Mode to close the chat and get the style panel back.

Good to know

  • By default, page edits start without asking. Other actions, like deleting pages or publishing, ask first. See How to choose what the AI Assistant may do without asking.
  • One request is one Undo step: Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) takes back the whole edit. See How to undo changes made by the AI Assistant.
  • You can ask for more than styling, for example Make the word "free" bold, Make this section fade in when it scrolls into view or Turn this section into a scroll story. See What can the TeleportHQ AI Assistant do?.
  • Your chats are saved per project and are private to you. Collaborators don't see them.
  • If you switch to another browser tab, the page title shows ● AI response ready or ● AI needs your input when the assistant is done or needs you.
  • After 5 minutes without a message, a long chat can show "It's been a while — your next message will use extra tokens to re-process and cache the conversation." Start a new chat if your task is done.
  • Messages can be up to 50,000 characters long on trial and paid plans.
  • For a small change to one element, the quick AI prompt is faster. For prompt ideas, see How to get better results from TeleportHQ's AI.
